Editorial Policy: How We Research, Price and Review

Last updated: October 25, 2026

NerdSnack is an independent site founded and edited by Jeff Benson. This page explains how we research, price and review what we publish, and what to do if you spot a mistake.

Who writes NerdSnack

  • Jeff Benson, Founder and Editor. A lifelong comic book fan who has played Magic: The Gathering since 2020 and follows every new card set from reveal season to release. More on the About page.
  • Guest authors. Nick H writes some of our Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer coverage. Guest articles show the author’s name at the top.

Drafts are built with modern writing tools. Every article is researched and checked against its sources before it goes live, and the facts in it (prices, dates, card numbers, odds) come from the sources named on the page.

How we price cards

  • Card prices come from TCGplayer. When a card has actually sold, we show sale prices, usually the median of its most recent sales. When it hasn’t sold yet, we show the cheapest current listing, marked “from”, with how many copies are listed.
  • Every price page says the date we checked the prices.
  • Prices move fast after a release, so we re-check chase-card pages in the weeks after launch and show the new date at the top.
  • “Most expensive” lists rank each card by its priciest version (foil, showcase, serialized or signature) and say which version that is.

Pull rates, odds and box value

When a publisher posts official odds, we use them and link to them. When it doesn’t, we use community-tracked estimates and label them as unofficial. Box “expected value” math uses the prices on the same page and is an estimate, not a promise of what you’ll pull.

Deck upgrade guides

Our Commander precon upgrade guides use EDHREC data on which cards players add to and cut from each deck, plus TCGplayer prices. Both are dated on the page.

News, release dates and rumors

Release dates and announcements come from official sources wherever possible: the publisher, studio, platform or store. Leaks and rumors are labeled as unconfirmed until they’re official.

Reviews and products sent to us

  • If a brand sends us a product, the review says so.
  • We only write hands-on reviews of products we have actually used, with our own photos, and every review includes what we didn’t like.
  • Brands don’t see or approve reviews before they’re published, and sending a product doesn’t guarantee coverage.
  • “Review roundup” articles summarize what published critics said. They’re labeled as roundups and don’t claim we played or watched something we didn’t.

Affiliate links and ads

Some links go to TCGplayer, Amazon and other retailers, and we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Those links are marked as sponsored, and a commission never decides what we recommend or how we rank it. Ads are served by Mediavine. Anything paid for is labeled as sponsored. Details are in our Affiliate Disclosure and Privacy Policy.

Images

Card and product images come from the publishers and retailers that make or sell them, and we credit them on the page. We don’t use AI-generated pictures of cards or products.

Corrections and updates

If we get something wrong, email hello@nerdsnack.com or use our contact page. We fix errors as soon as we can confirm them, and articles with significant changes show an update date at the top.
