Privacy Policy

NerdSnack (“we,” “us,” or “our”) runs nerdsnack.com. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with and the choices you have. If you have a question, email hello@nerdsnack.com.

1. The short version

  • You can read NerdSnack without an account and without giving us your name or email.
  • We use cookies for analytics and ads only if you allow them in our cookie banner. You can change that choice at any time.
  • If you email us, use the contact form or join Nerd Snack Monthly, we keep your email address to reply or send the newsletter. Nothing else.
  • We don’t sell your personal information.
  • Some links are affiliate links (mostly Amazon). Clicking one lets the retailer know you came from us.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us.

  • Contact form (WPForms): your name, email address and message.
  • Newsletter (MailPoet): your email address, the date you signed up and whether you confirmed. We send a confirmation email first, and every newsletter has an unsubscribe link.
  • Email: anything you choose to send to hello@nerdsnack.com.

Information collected automatically.

  • Server logs: our host records standard request data such as IP address, browser, device type, the page requested and the time. This is used for security and keeping the site running.
  • Analytics (with your consent): Google Analytics 4 records which pages you view, how you arrived, roughly where you are (city or country), your device and how long you stay. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.
  • Advertising cookies (with your consent): see section 4.
  • Spam protection: when you submit a form, we briefly keep a record tied to your IP address to stop automated sign-ups. It expires after one hour.

3. Cookies and your consent

We use CookieYes to ask for your consent. On your first visit the banner lets you accept all cookies, reject non-essential cookies or customize your choice by category: necessary, functional, analytics, performance and advertisement. Necessary cookies, including the one that stores your consent choice, always run because the site needs them. Everything else waits for your consent.

You can change your choice at any time with the cookie settings button on the site, or by clearing cookies in your browser. Our Cookie Policy lists the cookies in more detail.

4. Advertising (Google AdSense)

We may show ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site and other sites. Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads based on your visits to NerdSnack and other sites on the internet.

You can turn off personalized ads in Google’s Ad Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors’ cookies at aboutads.info. If you reject advertisement cookies in our banner, any ads you see will not be personalized. To learn more, see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

5. Affiliate links

NerdSnack is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. We may also use other retailers’ affiliate programs. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer can set its own cookies and record that you came from NerdSnack. We get a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Retailers don’t tell us who you are or what you bought. We only see totals, such as the number of orders. See our affiliate disclaimer.

6. Push notifications

If you choose to allow browser notifications, OneSignal stores a notification token for your browser along with basic device and browser details so it can deliver our alerts. You can turn notifications off at any time in your browser’s site settings.

7. Embedded content

Some articles embed content from other sites, such as YouTube trailers or posts from X. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other site, and that site may collect data about you under its own privacy policy.

8. How we use your information

  • To reply to messages and corrections.
  • To send Nerd Snack Monthly to people who signed up.
  • To understand which articles are useful so we can improve them.
  • To show ads and earn affiliate commissions, which pay for the site.
  • To keep the site secure and block spam and abuse.

Where data protection laws such as the GDPR apply, our legal bases are your consent (analytics, ads, newsletter, push notifications), our legitimate interests (security, replying to messages you send us) and legal obligations.

9. Who we share it with

We share information only with the services that run the site:

  • Hostinger for web hosting and our email inbox.
  • Google for analytics, search tools and ads.
  • Amazon and other retailers, through affiliate links you click.
  • OneSignal for push notifications, if you opt in.

Contact form messages and newsletter sign-ups are stored in our own WordPress database. We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We don’t sell personal information. Under California law, advertising cookies can count as “sharing.” You can opt out by rejecting advertisement cookies in our banner.

10. How long we keep it

  • Contact messages and emails: as long as we need them to deal with your request, and no more than 24 months.
  • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only what we need to make sure you aren’t emailed again.
  • Analytics: according to our Google Analytics data retention setting.
  • Spam-protection records: one hour.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, including the EU, UK and California, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct it
  • Delete it
  • Get a copy of it
  • Object to or limit how we use it
  • Withdraw consent

Email hello@nerdsnack.com and we’ll reply within 30 days. We won’t treat you differently for using these rights. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

12. Children

NerdSnack is not aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we’ll delete it.

13. International transfers and security

Some of the services we use, including Google and Amazon, process data in the United States and other countries. We use HTTPS across the site and limit who can access our admin area. No online service can be completely secure, but we work to protect what we hold.

14. Changes to this policy

When we change how we handle data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted on the site.
