The Big Two: Wolverine and God of War Steal the Show

Sony bookended the show with its two most anticipated PlayStation exclusives. Marvel’s Wolverine opened the showcase with an extended gameplay reveal, while God of War Laufey closed it with a stunning announcement trailer. Everything in between was gravy — but very good gravy.

Marvel’s Wolverine — September 15, 2026 (PS5 Exclusive)

Insomniac Games opened the State of Play with an extended gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, confirming a September 15, 2026 release date exclusively on PS5. The trailer highlighted combat that is deliberately faster and more violent than the Spider-Man series — Logan’s berserker rage and adamantium claws make for a significantly more brutal experience than swinging through Manhattan. Team X members were shown in the trailer, with Jean Grey confirmed as a major story presence. Insomniac says a full deep-dive showcase with story details is planned for late Summer 2026 ahead of launch.

God of War Laufey — Release Date TBA

The closer that nobody saw coming. Santa Monica Studio unveiled God of War Laufey — a new entry in the franchise that shifts the protagonist from Kratos to Faye, his late wife and the mother of Atreus. The announcement trailer showed Faye embarking on a journey through the afterlife of the gods, and Sony committed 20 minutes of footage to the reveal, suggesting this is a full mainline entry rather than a spin-off. No release date was given, but the scope of the reveal implies a 2027 target. This is easily one of the most significant PlayStation announcements in years.

Release Date Confirmations: Fall 2026 Is Stacked

Beyond the two headliners, the State of Play confirmed release windows for a wave of titles all landing in the September–October corridor.

Dune: Awakening — September 22, 2026

Funcom’s open-world survival MMO set on Arrakis finally has a console release date: September 22, 2026 on PS5. The State of Play reveal also confirmed a new single-player mode for players who want to experience the world of Dune without the MMO elements — a smart addition that dramatically broadens the game’s potential audience. Dune: Awakening has been in PC early access and the PS5 version arrives fully launched with all content.

Control Resonant — September 24, 2026

Remedy Entertainment confirmed Control Resonant — the next entry in the Control universe — launches September 24, 2026. The showcase gave a new look at the Oldest House and Jesse Faden navigating a reality that has grown even more unstable since the events of the original game. Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 was widely praised, and expectations for Resonant are extremely high as a result.

Silent Hill: Townfall — September 24, 2026

Konami and No Code confirmed Silent Hill: Townfall launches September 24 — the same day as Control Resonant, which is an aggressive scheduling choice. Townfall is a narrative horror game with a distinctly different visual style from mainline Silent Hill entries, with No Code (Stories Untold, Observation) bringing a lo-fi psychological approach to the franchise. The State of Play trailer leaned into atmosphere over action.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword — September 25, 2026

Capcom’s Onimusha revival lands September 25, 2026, and a playable demo is available right now on PS5. The State of Play showed extended gameplay from the feudal Japan action game, which brings back the series’ signature onimusha powers and sword combat with a modern engine. The demo has been broadly well-received since the showcase aired, with players praising the weight and feel of the combat.

Rayman Legends Retold — October 1, 2026

Ubisoft announced Rayman Legends Retold — a full 3D remake of the beloved 2013 platformer. The new version retains the music-based levels and co-op gameplay that made the original iconic but rebuilds everything in a 3D art style, adds a new villain, expands the story, and includes new levels. Launching October 1, 2026 on PS5, PC, and other platforms.

Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered — October 1, 2026

Koei Tecmo announced Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered for October 1, 2026. The remaster includes all DLC from the original Complete Edition, updated visuals, and online multiplayer. For fans of the musou genre, this is comfort food — Dynasty Warriors 3 is widely considered the peak of the classic era of the franchise.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve — October 2, 2026

Bandai Namco confirmed Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026. The State of Play trailer showed high-speed dogfighting across dramatic new environments, with the series’ signature blend of real-world aircraft and fictional geopolitical conflict fully intact. Ace Combat 7 remains one of the best flight combat games ever made, and Wings of Theve looks to build on that foundation.

Also Shown: Phantom Blade Zero, Marvel Tokon, and More

The showcase packed in several additional reveals between the major announcements.

Phantom Blade Zero received a new trailer from S-GAME showcasing new locations and enemy types. No release date was confirmed, but the game continues to look like one of the most visually impressive action titles in development. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls added three new characters to its growing roster — Magneto, Carnage, and Green Goblin — all shown in gameplay footage. Bancho the Chef (a direct prequel to Dave the Diver from Mintrocket) was announced with a brief teaser, and additional Tomb Raider footage was shown focusing on exploration and storytelling.

Final Verdict

This was one of Sony’s strongest State of Play presentations in recent memory. God of War Laufey alone would have made the show memorable — a new protagonist, a fresh mythological setting, and 20 minutes of reveal footage signals Sony treating this as a true flagship announcement. Marvel’s Wolverine looks brutal and inventive in a way the Spider-Man games never quite reached. And the supporting lineup — Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Onimusha, Ace Combat 8 — makes September and October 2026 a genuinely daunting stretch for anyone trying to keep up with releases.
