Short answer: Yes, if you like grinding out value and draining the table. Doom Prevails is a blue-black-red Villains deck. Doctor Doom makes one of your Villains connive every combat, and every land you discard costs each opponent 2 life. It also has the most valuable reprints of the four Marvel precons, led by Black Market Connections, Luxury Suite, Toxic Deluge and Skullclamp. It’s slower to set up than Wakanda Forever and needs Villains on the board, which is why we rank it #3 of the four. It’s about $68 on TCGplayer, or $63.52 sold by Amazon.

What’s in the Doom Prevails precon?
Doom Prevails is one of the four Commander decks from Marvel Super Heroes. It’s 100 cards in blue, black and red, built around Villains:
- Face commander: Doctor Doom, King of Latveria ({1}{U}{B}{R}, 3/3). Whenever you discard one or more land cards, each opponent loses 2 life. At the beginning of combat on your turn, a Villain you control gains menace and connives: draw a card, then discard a card, and if you discarded a nonland card, that creature gets a +1/+1 counter.
- Alternate commander: Loki, the Deceiver. When Loki attacks, he makes a tapped and attacking copy of another Villain you control for the turn, and you draw a card whenever your Villains deal combat damage to a player.
- The rest of the deck: about 30 creatures, almost all Villains (Kang, Ultron, Loki, the Frightful Four, Iron Monger), plus removal, card draw and mana rocks.

Doctor Doom is by far the popular choice. EDHREC has 4,677 decks built from this precon with Doom as the commander, against 557 with Loki.
How does Doom Prevails play?
Every turn, Doom makes one of your Villains connive at the start of combat. That smooths your draws, and every extra land you pitch drains each opponent for 2. Over a long game that adds up to a lot of damage without ever attacking.
The new cards push the same plan:
- Glorious Purpose puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature every time it connives. After six, you cast up to four spells from the top of your library for free.
- Kang Dynasty goads one creature per opponent for two turns, so they have to attack your other opponents, and you draw a card each time one of them connects.
- Endless Ranks of HYDRA makes a 2/1 menace Villain for each opponent, and comes back from the graveyard when your commander enters or attacks.
- Age of Ultron destroys a nonartifact creature for each opponent, then makes a 2/2 Robot Villain for each of them.
The deck has answers too: Toxic Deluge, Blasphemous Act and Kindred Dominance as board wipes (Kindred Dominance can name Villain and keep your whole team), plus Terminate, Chaos Warp and Bedevil for single threats.

Those nine cards add up to about $43, so roughly two-thirds of the deck’s $68 price is in a handful of staples you’d play in other decks too. Black Market Connections alone is one of the best card-draw engines in black Commander decks: every turn it gives you Treasure, cards or 3/2 creature tokens for life.

What’s weak about Doom Prevails?
- It’s slow to get going. Doom’s damage only comes when you discard lands, so it builds over a long game instead of winning fast, and the deck needs Villains on the board to snowball.
- Slow mana for three colors. The lands EDHREC players cut most are Terramorphic Expanse, Scavenger Grounds and enters-tapped duals like Canyon Slough and Fetid Pools.
- Some filler Villains. The cards players cut most are Damocles Base, Sword of Kang, Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Batroc the Leaper, Lady Loki, Agent of Chaos, Tri-Sentinel, Act of Vengeance, Titania, Proud Pummeler and Klaw, Master of Sound.
The fix is cheap. Our Doom Prevails upgrade guide lists the 10 cards to add (about $53 in all) and the 10 to cut, including Leader, Super-Genius, Doctor Octopus, Master Planner and Doom Reigns Supreme.
Is Doom Prevails worth buying?
For value, yes. The reprints alone cover about two-thirds of the price. For play, it’s the best Marvel deck for players who like slow, controlling games and draining opponents, but it isn’t the easiest to pick up. If you’re newer to Commander, Wakanda Forever plays better out of the box. If you just want the cheapest deck, The Fantastic Four is about $38.
