How does the Limit Break deck win?

Limit Break is the Final Fantasy VII Commander deck, led by Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER (Naya: red, green and white, 5 mana, a 4/4 with haste). When Cloud enters, he attaches an Equipment you control to himself. Whenever he attacks, you draw a card for each equipped attacking creature, and if Cloud has 7 or more power you also make two Treasures. So the plan is simple: suit Cloud up to 7 power, swing every turn, and turn each attack into cards and mana. The upgrades below make that happen faster and more often.

What are the best Limit Break deck upgrades?

1. Buster Sword

Buster Sword Magic: The Gathering card
Mythic · 3 mana · Equipment

What it does: Equipped creature gets +3/+2. Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, you draw a card and may cast a spell from your hand with mana value up to that damage for free. Equip costs {2}.

Why it fits Cloud: Cloud is a 4/4, so the Sword alone takes him to 7 power, which turns on his Treasures. Every hit also draws and casts a free spell.

Price: about $46.63 (TCGplayer) · in 54% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

2. Cloud, Midgar Mercenary

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary Magic: The Gathering card
Mythic · 2 mana · legendary creature

What it does: When it enters, you search your library for an Equipment card and put it in your hand. While it’s equipped, its triggered abilities and those of Equipment attached to it trigger an extra time.

Why it fits Cloud: A 2-mana tutor for the Buster Sword, and once it’s equipped every Equipment trigger on it happens twice.

Price: about $20.70 (TCGplayer) · in 53% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

3. Sram, Senior Edificer

Sram, Senior Edificer Magic: The Gathering card
Rare · 2 mana · legendary creature

What it does: Whenever you cast an Aura, Equipment or Vehicle spell, you draw a card.

Why it fits Cloud: An Equipment deck casts a lot of Equipment, so Sram turns each one into a fresh card for 2 mana.

Price: about $1.69 (TCGplayer) · in 39% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

4. Genji Glove

What it does: Equipped creature has double strike. When it attacks in the first combat of the turn, it untaps and you get an extra combat phase. Equip costs {3}.

Why it fits Cloud: Two combats means Cloud’s attack trigger happens twice: twice the cards and twice the Treasures, plus double-strike damage. (We left out the card image because its art is already on the site.)

Price: about $7.46 (TCGplayer) · in 39% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

5. Forge Anew

Forge Anew Magic: The Gathering card
Rare · 3 mana · enchantment

What it does: When it enters, it returns an Equipment card from your graveyard to the battlefield. On your turn you can equip at instant speed, and your first equip each turn costs nothing.

Why it fits Cloud: A free equip every turn saves mana on expensive Equipment like Ultima Weapon, and it brings back a destroyed Sword.

Price: about $4.29 (TCGplayer) · in 39% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

6. Cloud, Planet’s Champion

Cloud, Planet’s Champion Magic: The Gathering card
Mythic · 5 mana · legendary creature

What it does: On your turn, while it’s equipped, it has double strike and indestructible. Equip abilities that target it cost {2} less.

Why it fits Cloud: A second big Cloud that wears Equipment cheaply and is hard to kill while attacking.

Price: about $1.35 (TCGplayer) · in 38% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

7. Danitha Capashen, Paragon

Danitha Capashen, Paragon Magic: The Gathering card
Uncommon · 3 mana · legendary creature

What it does: First strike, vigilance and lifelink, and your Aura and Equipment spells cost {1} less.

Why it fits Cloud: Cheaper Equipment every turn, on a body that carries Equipment well.

Price: about $0.36 (TCGplayer) · in 35% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

8. Ultima Weapon

Ultima Weapon Magic: The Gathering card
Rare · 7 mana · Equipment

What it does: Equipped creature gets +7/+7, and whenever it attacks you destroy target creature an opponent controls. Equip costs {7}.

Why it fits Cloud: Any creature wearing it has 7+ power, so Cloud’s Treasure trigger is on, and every attack removes a blocker. Forge Anew makes the equip cost free.

Price: about $4.74 (TCGplayer) · in 33% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

9. Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms Magic: The Gathering card
Rare · 6 mana · legendary creature

What it does: Whenever it enters or attacks, you look at the top six cards of your library and may put any number of Equipment cards from among them onto the battlefield.

Why it fits Cloud: Free Equipment off the top of your deck when it enters and again every time it attacks.

Price: about $0.67 (TCGplayer) · in 32% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

10. Firion, Wild Rose Warrior

Firion, Wild Rose Warrior Magic: The Gathering card
Rare · 3 mana · legendary creature

What it does: Your equipped creatures have haste. Whenever a nontoken Equipment enters, you create a temporary token copy of it with cheaper equip costs.

Why it fits Cloud: Haste lets a freshly suited-up creature attack right away, and each Equipment comes with a free copy for a turn.

Price: about $0.84 (TCGplayer) · in 32% of EDHREC Limit Break decks

How much does it cost to upgrade the Limit Break deck?

All 10 cards cost about $88.73 at their cheapest TCGplayer printings. The Buster Sword ($46.63) and Cloud, Midgar Mercenary ($20.70) are most of that. Skip those two and the other eight picks cost about $21.40, which is a good first upgrade on a budget.

Which cards should you cut from the Limit Break deck?

  • Summon: Kujata (cut from 79% of decks): a 6-mana Saga creature that doesn’t help your Equipment plan.
  • Avalanche of Sector 7 (76%): its power depends on how many artifacts your opponents control.
  • Furious Rise (76%): slow extra cards, and Cloud already draws plenty.
  • Heidegger, Shinra Executive (73%)
  • Explorer’s Scope (65%): an Equipment, but it adds no power and only helps you find lands.
  • Hellkite Tyrant (65%): 6 mana, and its payoff depends on your opponents’ artifacts.
  • Barret Wallace (65%)
  • Cait Sith, Fortune Teller (63%)
  • Skullclamp (62%): best with small creatures that die, while this deck wants big equipped attackers.
  • Secret Rendezvous (61%): it gives an opponent three cards too.

Is the Limit Break deck worth buying now?

Yes, if you like Equipment decks. The regular deck is about $46.99 on TCGplayer (October 25, 2026), and it’s one of the most-built precons on EDHREC, with 12,926 decks.
