Japan Crate is gone. It stopped selling boxes on March 31, 2025, so the real choice now is TokyoTreat, Bokksu or Sakuraco. All three ship Japanese snacks straight from Japan every month, and their plan prices are almost the same. Shipping and US import fees are what change the order. Every price below comes from each brand’s own site, checked October 30, 2026.
We earn a commission if you subscribe to TokyoTreat or Sakuraco through our links. Bokksu doesn’t pay us, and it still comes out cheapest below.
The Short Version
| Box | Best for | 12 mo | US total |
|---|---|---|---|
| TokyoTreat | Pop culture snacks, KitKats, ramen | $32.50 | $54.37 |
| Sakuraco | Traditional sweets, tea, home goods | $32.50 | $54.37 |
| Bokksu | Regional snacks with a tea pairing | $32.99 | $49.98 |
Prices are per box on the 12-month plan. US total = plan price + shipping + US import duties.
What Happened to Japan Crate?

Bokksu announced it had bought Japan Crate on September 13, 2023. Japan Crate kept making its own boxes for a while. Then, on March 13, 2025, it announced it was shutting down after 10 years. Sales closed on March 31, 2025, and the Cherry Blossom Crate was its last box.
Japan Crate’s website now says goodbye and sends fans to Bokksu and Sugoi Mart. That also ended the cheap way in. Japan Crate’s small Mini box was an easy one-time try, and none of the three boxes left has anything like it.
TokyoTreat: The Fun Box
TokyoTreat costs $37.50 a box month to month, $35.50 on a 3-month plan, $33.50 on 6 months and $32.50 on 12 months. The box is full-size, Japan-only convenience store snacks: rare KitKat flavors, ramen and other noodles, chips, Hi-Chew and gummies, mochi and jellies, plus a small gacha toy or goodie. A 16-page booklet lists every snack with allergen info.
The November 2026 box is called Matcha Fall Rush, and the order deadline is November 15. As of October 30, the 12-month plan also comes with a free bonus, the Pokémon Halloween Vault, which TokyoTreat values at $60. Bonuses change often, so check the plan page before you pay.
TokyoTreat is run by ICHIGO Inc. in Tokyo, the same company behind Sakuraco and YumeTwins. If you liked Japan Crate’s candy-heavy, pop culture boxes, this is the closest match.
Sakuraco: The Tea-Time Box

Sakuraco is TokyoTreat’s calmer sister box, and it has the same prices: $37.50 month to month, down to $32.50 a box on 12 months. Instead of convenience store snacks, it sends 20 traditional snacks and candies from family makers, a tea to go with them, and one home good each month, like a small ceramic dish, chopsticks or a furoshiki cloth. A 24-page culture guide explains the makers and the theme.
The November 2026 box is Sakai’s Autumn Wonders, built around the tea and craft history of Sakai, a city in Osaka Prefecture. You can add a Premium Tea Pairing for $10 more a month. As of October 30, the 12-month plan comes with a Sakai Matcha Tea Ceremony Set: matcha powder, a bowl and a small whisk.
Bokksu: The Best Price Delivered

Bokksu costs $39.99 a box month to month, $35.99 on 3 months, $33.99 on 6 months and $32.99 on 12 months. Each box has 22 snacks, candies and a tea from small regional makers, plus a 20 to 24 page guide. Longer plans add a few free bonus snacks. In feel it sits between the other two: more traditional than TokyoTreat, but with no home goods like Sakuraco.
Its month-to-month price is the highest of the three. Bokksu charges less for shipping, though, and that flips the ranking once the box reaches your door.
Shipping and Import Fees Change the Math
None of these three ships free anymore. On September 16, 2026, TokyoTreat and Sakuraco raised shipping to $16.99 a box, and US orders also pay import duties of $4.88 to $5.25 a box, depending on the plan. Bokksu lists US shipping at $13.99 a box plus $3 in import duties. Older reviews, and the old version of this page, say Bokksu ships free. It doesn’t now.
| Plan | TokyoTreat or Sakuraco | Bokksu |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $59.74 | $56.98 |
| 3 months | $57.64 | $52.98 |
| 6 months | $55.52 | $50.98 |
| 12 months | $54.37 | $49.98 |
US total per box: plan price + shipping + US import duties. Checked October 30, 2026.
So Bokksu is about $3 a box cheaper month to month and about $4.50 cheaper on the longer plans. Outside the US, TokyoTreat and Sakuraco charge $16.99 a box to the UK and EU, and Bokksu charges $15.99 to the UK, EU, Canada and Australia. Local taxes can apply on top.
Which One Should You Pick?
Pick TokyoTreat if you want the fun box. It’s the one with KitKat flavors, instant ramen and a toy, and it’s the easiest pick for anime and gaming fans or kids.
Pick Sakuraco if you want a slower, prettier box. Traditional sweets, a tea and a small handmade item make it the best gift for a tea drinker or anyone into Japanese craft.
Pick Bokksu if price matters most. It’s the cheapest of the three delivered to the US, and you still get a tea and a culture guide every month.
Just want to try one? There’s no cheap trial box anymore. Buy one month on the monthly plan and expect about $57 to $60 delivered to the US. All three auto-renew, so cancel before the next billing date if you only want one box. All three also sell gift subscriptions.
Bottom Line
For most people in the US, Bokksu is the best value right now. TokyoTreat is the most fun, and Sakuraco is the best gift. If you’re buying for someone else, match the box to the person: snack hunter, tea drinker or bargain hunter.
