How to Play Commander Draft With Mystery Booster Commander (Rules and Tips)

One box of Mystery Booster Commander Edition is exactly one Commander Draft: eight players, three 20-card packs each. You take two cards per pick, pass left, then right, then left, and end with a 60-card pool. From that pool you build a deck of at least 60 cards, commander included, with as many basic lands as you like, then split into two four-player Commander games. This set adds three twists: one-color commanders can team up as partners, a fallback rule always lets you play two colors, and eight new Rulebreaker commanders bend deckbuilding. If you have a box, here’s how to run the night and how to draft well.

How does Commander Draft work?

Wizards’ release notes lay it out in a few steps. Sit eight players around a table in random order and give everyone three packs.

  1. Everyone opens pack one, takes two cards, and passes the rest to the left.
  2. Keep taking two from each pack you’re handed until the packs are empty.
  3. Open pack two and pass to the right. Pack three goes left again.
  4. Build a deck of at least 60 cards from your 60 picks plus any basic lands. Every card must fit your commander’s color identity.
  5. Split into two pods of four and play regular Commander.

That last row surprises Commander players. Unlike a normal Commander deck, a Commander Draft deck can run two or three copies of the same card, so if a second removal spell comes your way, take it.

How many picks do you get, and what comes back?

A 20-card pack with two cards taken per pick lasts ten picks, so you make 30 picks across three packs. With eight players, the pack you opened comes back to you at pick 9 with four cards left. You take two and the player next to you takes the last two.

That matters on pick one. If you open two good cards in a color nobody near you is drafting, one of them might come back. We wouldn’t count on it with a bomb, but it works for a solid playable.

Fewer than eight players works too. The release notes say the format is built for eight, then add that there’s “no wrong way to play.” Smaller pods just see their own pack again sooner:

What are the special commander rules in this draft?

Chira, All In, a red Human Rogue commander from Mystery Booster Commander Edition
Chira, All In · red Rogue

Three commander rules matter here, and the first two only exist for drafts with these packs.

One-color commanders can partner. At events using these packs, any eligible commander with one color or none in its color identity can be treated as if it has partner. Pair two and your deck uses both colors. Boss Uramon (black) and Chira, All In (red) make a legal Rakdos Rogues team, and Uramon gives attacking Rogues deathtouch. You can even partner two copies of the same commander if you drafted both.

You can always play two colors. If you drafted a two-color deck but only have a one-color commander in one of those colors, you choose the second color and add it to your deck’s color identity. Technically it lives on an emblem in the command zone, but in practice you just play the 59 other cards. If no one-color commander fits at all, you pick both colors and play a 60-card deck with nothing in the command zone. Tell the table which colors you added when commanders are revealed.

Partners are tracked separately. Commander tax counts per commander, and a player loses to 21 combat damage from any one of them, not both combined.

How do Rulebreaker commanders work in a draft?

Tolabow, Loch Rascal · spells in one more color
The Everforger, a colorless Rulebreaker commander for artifact creatures and Equipment
The Everforger · artifact creatures of any color

Rulebreaker is a new ability word on eight of the new commanders. It changes deckbuilding rules, but only if that card is your commander, and it only matters before the game starts. In a draft, that turns cards other players can’t use into picks for you.

CommanderYour deck can also run
Seluma, Light of Aysen
white
Angels of any color
Tolabow, Loch Rascal
blue
Instants and sorceries in one extra color
The Unluckiest Planeswalker
red
Auras of any color
Maular, the Next Evolution

Valko Indorian

The Everforger
colorless
Artifact creatures and Equipment of any color
Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero
red-green
Any land cards
Whtz, the Bibliophile

No maximum deck size

Six of them also let you play any basic land, and Grizzlegom allows any land at all. That’s how you cast the off-color cards. Two details from the release notes: Valko means the Phyrexian creature type, not Phyrexian mana symbols, and Tolabow’s text was updated so the extra color only applies to instants and sorceries.

Whtz is the fun one. Basic lands are unlimited in Commander Draft, so you could pad a deck past 200 cards, and then its draw ability costs nothing but a tap. It’s legal. The release notes politely ask you to make sure you can still shuffle the thing.

How should you draft and build your deck?

Here’s how we’d approach it, based on how the packs are built.

Don’t panic-pick commanders. Every pack has two commander slots: a rare or mythic reprinted commander and a new-to-Magic one. That’s 48 commander-slot cards in an eight-player pod before you count legendary commons and uncommons, and pick-two lets you grab a commander and a playable from the same pack. Spend early picks on removal and card draw.

Value one-color commanders. Thanks to the partner rule, any two of them make a two-color deck. More than half of the 60 new cards are one color or colorless, like Blor, Flitwing, Istvan and Matoc above.

Read the packs for colors. Each pack has three commons or uncommons in each color, so a color that keeps flowing late means nobody near you is in it.

Take mana fixing seriously. Almost every pack has a Future Sight frame card, and that list includes Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Mind Stone and Fellwar Stone.

Build with plenty of lands. A 40-card Limited deck usually runs 17 lands. Scale that to 60 cards and you land around 25, and we’d count mana rocks toward that if your deck tops out at six or seven mana.

Agree on the weird cards before game one. Each pack has a playtest card, and a rare few have an acorn card with digital-only words like “conjure” and “perpetually.” Both are legal in Mystery Booster Commander Draft and Sealed. Decide as a table how you’ll track them.

Where can you play Commander Draft with this set?

Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 contents: a Mystery Booster Commander Edition box, Secret Gallery foils and promo cards
Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 came with one Mystery Booster Commander box, exactly one eight-player draft. Image: Wizards of the Coast

The first big chance is MagicCon: Atlanta, November 13 to 15, where Wizards is running events with the set. Wizards’ schedule for the set also lists MagicCon: Detroit (February 26 to 28, 2027), Tokyo (May 14 to 16), Las Vegas (August 27 to 29) and Amsterdam (December 3 to 5).

At home, you need a box. Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 ($249.99) included one, but it sold out on October 19. On TCGplayer a sealed box had a $365.05 market price on October 30, about $45.63 a player for an eight-person draft. Our Mystery Booster Commander Edition guide covers the other ways to get one.

What to skip

  • Drafting for value. Most new commanders sell for less than a pack. If you want a specific one, see our Mystery Booster Commander chase cards page and buy the single.
  • Taking every commander you see. With two commander slots in every pack, you’ll see plenty. A pile of commanders and no removal loses games.
  • Taking a Rulebreaker commander and then ignoring it. Seluma without extra Angels is just a 4/4 flier for five. Draft the cards it unlocks.
  • Bringing these decks to normal Commander night unchanged. Duplicates and the partner rule are Commander Draft rules, and playtest cards are only legal in Mystery Booster Draft and Sealed.

Commander Draft FAQ

How many players do you need for Commander Draft?

Eight is the target: one box, three packs each, then two games of four. Wizards’ release notes add that there’s no wrong way to play, so smaller groups can draft too.

How many cards are in a Commander Draft deck?

At least 60, counting your commander. With two partner commanders, that’s 58 cards in the library. With the added-color emblem, it’s 59 plus your commander.

What’s the starting life total?

The release notes say to play “a traditional Commander game” once decks are built and don’t list a different number, so use Commander’s normal 40 life unless your table agrees otherwise.

Are the new cards legal in regular Commander?

The 60 new cards are legal in Commander from November 13, 2026. Playtest cards and acorn cards are only legal in Mystery Booster Draft and Sealed.
