Thanos Commander Deck Guide: How to Build the Mad Titan in MTG

Yes, Thanos, the Mad Titan is a strong Commander. He’s a 3-mana 4/4 with deathtouch and lifelink, and his Power-up ability destroys every other creature with odd or even mana value, your choice. Build your own creatures around one of the two so the snap mostly hits your opponents, ramp into all five colors, and use flicker spells like Ephemerate to snap again. About 3,500 decks on EDHREC run him.

The Card: Thanos, the Mad Titan

Thanos costs {R}{W}{B} and is a 4/4 Legendary Creature — Eternal Villain with deathtouch and lifelink. The reason to play him is his Power-up ability:

“Power-up — {C}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}: Put two +1/+1 counters on Thanos. Choose odd or even. Destroy each other creature with mana value of the chosen quality.”

  • It’s cheaper the turn he enters. The cost is reduced by his mana cost if Thanos entered this turn, so the snap costs just {C}{U}{G} that turn. Six mana gets you Thanos plus a board wipe.
  • You need colorless mana. {C} means mana from a colorless source, like Sol Ring, Mind Stone or a utility land, not just any mana.
  • Tokens count as even. A token has mana value 0, and zero is even.
  • Each Power-up works once per Thanos. A Thanos that leaves the battlefield and comes back is a new object, so flickering him gives you another snap at the reduced cost.

Because the Power-up cost includes all five colors, Thanos’s color identity is five colors, so his deck can play any card.

Core Strategy: Snap, Flicker, Repeat

1. Pick a side. Build most of your creatures at either odd or even mana values, then snap the other one. The wipe clears your opponents’ boards while yours survives, and Thanos never destroys himself, since the ability only hits “each other creature.”

2. Ramp into five colors. The most-played cards in Thanos decks are ramp and removal. Farseek is in 43% of decks on EDHREC and Cultivate in 36%, with Three Visits, Nature’s Lore and Birds of Paradise close behind.

3. Flicker to snap again. Ephemerate (39% of decks) and Cloudshift (25%) blink Thanos, so he returns as a new object with a fresh, cheaper Power-up.

4. Protect what’s left. Heroic Intervention (35%) and Teferi’s Protection (22%) keep your board alive through wipes, including your own Blasphemous Act or Toxic Deluge.

5. Lean on Villains. Thanos is a Villain, and Marvel Super Heroes has strong Villain support. Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord (45%) and Tombstone, Career Criminal (36%) make Villain spells cost {1} less, and Madame Hydra (36%) makes a 2/1 menace Villain token whenever you cast a Villain spell. Those tokens have mana value 0, so they survive an odd snap.

The Chase Artifact: Cosmic Cube

Cosmic Cube MTG card
Cosmic Cube

Cosmic Cube is a 5-mana artifact with ward {2}. Whenever you attack, you look at the top six cards of your library and may cast a spell from among them for free, as long as its mana value is no more than the greatest power among your attackers. After his Power-up, Thanos attacks as a 6/6, so the Cube can cast almost anything in your deck. It’s about $7 on TCGplayer.

Upgrade Priority by Budget

Under $30

Start with mana: Farseek, Cultivate, Kodama’s Reach, Nature’s Lore and Three Visits, plus Sol Ring and Mind Stone for the colorless mana Thanos needs. Add Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile and Ephemerate. The Villain package of Baron Strucker, Madame Hydra and Tombstone costs well under $1 a card.

Under $75

Add Heroic Intervention (about $16), Birds of Paradise and Cosmic Cube. Blasphemous Act plus Heroic Intervention gives you a second wipe that spares your board.

Optimized Build

Demonic Tutor MTG card
Demonic Tutor

Teferi’s Protection (about $44), Demonic Tutor, fast mana like Mana Vault and Chrome Mox, and a full set of fetch lands and shock lands. Skip Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus and Dockside Extortionist: all three have been banned in Commander since September 2024.

Final Verdict

Thanos is one of the most interesting commanders in Marvel Super Heroes because his board wipe is selective. A well-built deck loses almost nothing when he snaps, while each opponent loses a big part of their board. He’s cheap to start, scales with your budget and plays very differently from a typical five-color deck.
