Watching Lord of the Rings for the first time? Start with Peter Jackson’s trilogy in release order: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Then watch The Hobbit trilogy, the anime movie The War of the Rohirrim and Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, whose Season 3 premieres on November 11, 2026. If you’d rather follow Middle-earth’s own timeline, flip it: Rings of Power, War of the Rohirrim, The Hobbit, then Lord of the Rings. The next movie, The Hunt for Gollum, opens December 17, 2027.
Updated November 1, 2026 · Includes The Rings of Power Season 3 and The Hunt for Gollum

Best Lord of the Rings watch order for first-timers

Lord of the Rings in chronological order
Already seen the films? Middle-earth’s own timeline makes a great rewatch, starting thousands of years earlier:
| # | Story | When it happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Rings of Power | The Second Age, thousands of years before the films, when the rings are forged |
| 2 | The War of the Rohirrim | About 183 years before The Lord of the Rings, in the days of Helm Hammerhand |
| 3 | The Hobbit trilogy | 60 years before The Lord of the Rings |
| 4 | The Hunt for Gollum (Dec 17, 2027) | Between Bilbo’s birthday party and the Mines of Moria |
| 5 | The Lord of the Rings trilogy | The War of the Ring, at the end of the Third Age |
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)
Peter Jackson’s three films follow Frodo and the Fellowship as they try to destroy the One Ring. They won 17 Oscars between them, including 11 for The Return of the King. If you only watch three things from this list, make it these.
The Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014)
Set 60 years earlier, The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins and thirteen dwarves on their quest to take back the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. Jackson stretched one short book into three long films, so they’re slower and lighter than The Lord of the Rings. They’re still worth it for Martin Freeman’s Bilbo and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug. Smaug is No. 10 in our ranking of the strongest dragons in fiction.
The War of the Rohirrim (2024)
This anime-style film tells the legend of Helm Hammerhand, the king of Rohan who gave Helm’s Deep its name, about two centuries before Frodo’s journey. Miranda Otto returns as narrator in her role as Éowyn. It’s a good one-night watch between the trilogies and the show.
The Rings of Power (2022-)
Prime Video’s series is set in the Second Age, thousands of years before the films. It follows a young Galadriel, Elrond and the rise of Sauron as the Rings of Power are made. Seasons 1 and 2 have 8 episodes each. Season 3 premieres Wednesday, November 11, 2026. It jumps several years past Season 2 to the height of the war between the Elves and Sauron, as Sauron works to forge the One Ring. It’s only on Prime Video.
What’s next: The Hunt for Gollum (2027)
Andy Serkis directs and returns as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, opening in theaters on December 17, 2027. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing. Boyens has said the story falls after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria, so it fits inside the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Theatrical or extended editions?
- First time, short on time: the theatrical cuts. They’re complete stories and still long.
- Love it already: the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings. They add character moments fans consider essential, like more of the Shire, Faramir’s backstory and Saruman’s fate in The Return of the King.
- The Hobbit: the extended cuts add more battle footage than story, so the theatrical versions are fine.
How long does it take to watch everything?
Jackson’s six films run about 17 hours in their theatrical cuts and about 21 hours extended. Add 2 hours 14 minutes for The War of the Rohirrim and roughly 17 hours for Rings of Power Seasons 1 and 2. That’s a long weekend for the films alone, or about a month at one movie or two episodes a night.
What about the old animated movies?
Before Jackson, Rankin/Bass made an animated The Hobbit (1977) and The Return of the King (1980), and Ralph Bakshi made an animated The Lord of the Rings (1978) that covers roughly the first half of the story. They’re fun for curious fans but not part of the modern films’ continuity.
Where to stream Lord of the Rings
The Rings of Power is exclusive to Prime Video. Peter Jackson’s six films and The War of the Rohirrim are Warner Bros. movies, and they move between streaming services, so check your apps or JustWatch. All of them are also sold digitally and on 4K box sets.
Lord of the Rings watch order FAQ
Should I watch The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings first?
The Lord of the Rings. It’s the better trilogy, and The Hobbit films are full of nods that land better once you know what’s coming.
Do I need to watch The Rings of Power before Season 3?
Yes. Season 3 continues the story of Seasons 1 and 2, even with the time jump.
Is The War of the Rohirrim connected to the movies?
Yes. It’s set in the same version of Middle-earth as Jackson’s films, about 183 years before them, and Miranda Otto narrates as Éowyn.
