The 10 Best Star Trek Captains, Ranked

Quick answer: The best Star Trek captain is Jean-Luc Picard, a diplomat first who was assimilated by the Borg, came back, and later led the Enterprise-E against them. James T. Kirk is a close second, and Benjamin Sisko, who led Starfleet’s side of the Dominion War from Deep Space Nine, is third. Kathryn Janeway rounds out the top four for getting Voyager home from the far side of the galaxy.

Updated November 3, 2026 · Covers every live-action series and film. Each captain is shown with their card from Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek set, out November 13; tap a card to see its price.

How we ranked them: the calls they made under pressure, what they actually achieved, and how hard their crews would follow them. We counted anyone who held the captain’s chair on screen for a real stretch, not just a single episode.

1. Jean-Luc Picard

Picard is the captain who talks first and fights last, and it nearly always works. He defended Data’s right to choose his own future in “The Measure of a Man,” refused to say there were five lights under Cardassian torture, and survived being turned into Locutus of Borg. Years later he led the Enterprise-E back into battle against the Borg in First Contact. No other captain has been tested in so many different ways and still held to his principles. Patrick Stewart played him from 1987 to 2023, across seven seasons of The Next Generation, four films and three seasons of Picard. He died on October 28, 2026, at age 86.

His card fits him: it makes your other creatures stronger and gives you a new Officer every time you cast a creature or Spacecraft.

2. James T. Kirk

Captain James T. Kirk · price on TCGplayer

Kirk took the Enterprise on its five-year mission and set the template for every captain after him. He’s the only cadet to beat the Kobayashi Maru (he reprogrammed the test), he beat Khan twice, and he stole the Enterprise to bring Spock back in The Search for Spock. In The Undiscovered Country he put aside his hatred of the Klingons and helped make peace with them. He’s bolder than Picard and wins plenty of fights Picard would have talked his way out of, which is why he’s so close behind.

Captain James T. Kirk gives you a choice every time he enters or attacks, and if your hand is empty you get all three: loot a card, make an Officer or pump your team.

3. Benjamin Sisko

Sisko ran a space station on the edge of a wormhole, became a religious figure to the Bajorans as the Emissary of the Prophets, and led Starfleet’s side of the Dominion War. He made the hardest call of any captain in “In the Pale Moonlight,” helping trick the Romulans into joining the war, and lived with it. He’s also the captain who punched Q.

His card turns dilemmas into Officer tokens, and its big ability, which needs all five colors of mana, lets you cast spells from the top of your library for free.

4. Kathryn Janeway

Stranded 70,000 light-years from home, Janeway merged a Starfleet crew with the Maquis rebels she’d been chasing, made a deal with the Borg against Species 8472 and still got Voyager home in seven years instead of seventy-five. No captain spent longer without Starfleet backing her up.

Captain Kathryn Janeway lets you play an extra land each turn, and every creature you play after her explores, which suits the longest road trip in Starfleet history.

5. Christopher Pike

Pike commanded the Enterprise before Kirk and was the captain in Star Trek’s original pilot, “The Cage.” In Discovery season 2 he touched a time crystal, saw the accident that would leave him badly injured, and chose that future anyway to save the galaxy. Strange New Worlds has made him the most likable captain in the franchise.

Captain Pike, Fullness of Time grows with every differently named land you control and lets you play lands from the top of your library.

6. Jonathan Archer

Archer captained Enterprise NX-01, Starfleet’s first Warp 5 starship, before there was a Federation. He led the mission against the Xindi after their attack on Earth and was there when the Federation was founded. He did a lot of it without the tools later captains take for granted.

His card comes with his dog, Porthos, as a 1/1 token.

7. Michael Burnham

Burnham began Discovery as Starfleet’s first mutineer, convicted after the Battle of the Binary Stars. She ended up taking Discovery more than 900 years into the future, solving the Burn and earning the captain’s chair. Nobody on this list climbed back from further down.

Captain Michael Burnham has trample and deals damage to each opponent whenever you play a land.

8. William Riker

Riker turned down several commands of his own to stay Picard’s first officer. When the Borg took Picard in “The Best of Both Worlds,” Riker took command and got him back. After Nemesis he finally became captain of the USS Titan.

Will Riker, First in the Field puts two extra lands from your library onto the battlefield each combat, which you sacrifice at your next end step.

9. Hikaru Sulu

Sulu, Space Swashbuckler · price on TCGplayer

Sulu spent years at the Enterprise’s helm before getting the USS Excelsior in The Undiscovered Country, where he came to Kirk’s aid at the Khitomer peace conference. His card’s name, Space Swashbuckler, nods to the shirtless fencing scene in “The Naked Time.”

Sulu has first strike and draws you a card when he taps on a turn an Equipment or Spacecraft entered.

10. Saru

Saru, Unthreatened card from Magic: The Gathering Star Trek
Saru, Unthreatened · price on TCGplayer

Saru was the first Kelpien in Starfleet, from a species raised to live in fear. After he lost his threat ganglia in season 2, he grew into a steady leader and captained Discovery through most of season 3. His card’s name, Unthreatened, is a nod to that change.

Saru, Unthreatened has flash and gives another creature hexproof when he enters.

Honorable mentions

Seven of Nine ends Picard season 3 as captain of the new Enterprise, and she has three Magic cards across the Star Trek set and its Commander decks. Carol Freeman of Lower Decks runs the Cerritos better than anyone gives her credit for, but she doesn’t have a card yet.
