Quick answer: The strongest character in The Lord of the Rings is Sauron, as long as he has the One Ring. Next is Gandalf the White, who beat a Balrog, came back stronger and broke Saruman’s staff with a word. Galadriel is the most powerful Elf left in Middle-earth, and the Balrog of Moria is the strongest monster the Fellowship ever faces.

How we ranked them: each character at their peak, judged by what they actually do in the stories. We left out Eru and the Valar, who are gods rather than characters you see fight. Every character is shown with their card from Magic: The Gathering’s official Lord of the Rings sets; tap a card to see its price.
What about Tom Bombadil?
He’s the one character the Ring has no power over: he puts it on and doesn’t vanish, and he can even see Frodo when Frodo wears it. But Tom never fights, never leaves his own land and, as Gandalf says, would soon forget it or throw it away if they gave it to him. Tolkien called him an enigma on purpose, so we leave him out of the ranking.

1. Sauron

Sauron put much of his own power into the One Ring so he could rule the other Rings of Power, which is why he’s both the strongest being in Middle-earth and the most vulnerable. With the Ring on his finger, it took the Last Alliance of Elves and Men to bring him down, and both of its leaders, Gil-galad and Elendil, died doing it. Even without the Ring he rebuilt Barad-dûr, raised armies across the East and nearly won the War of the Ring. If he had gotten it back, nothing on this list could have stopped him.
2. Gandalf the White

Gandalf is one of the Maiar, the same kind of being as Sauron and the Balrog, sent to Middle-earth in the shape of an old man. As Gandalf the Grey he fought the Balrog from the bridge of Khazad-dûm down to the roots of the mountain and back up to its peak, where he finally threw it down. He died doing it and was sent back as Gandalf the White, stronger than before.
Back from the dead, he freed Théoden from Saruman’s hold, drove off the Nazgûl to save Faramir, and cast Saruman out of the order of wizards, breaking his staff. The only reason he isn’t No. 1 is that he never had the Ring, and never wanted it.
3. Galadriel

Galadriel is the greatest of the Elves still in Middle-earth. She bears Nenya, one of the three Elven Rings, and its power is what keeps Lothlórien safe. When Frodo offers her the One Ring, she shows him what she’d become with it, a queen “terrible as the dawn,” and she turns it down. After Sauron fell, Galadriel threw down the walls of his old fortress, Dol Guldur, and in The Hobbit films she’s the one who drives Sauron out of it.
4. The Balrog of Moria

Durin’s Bane is a Maia of fire and shadow, a demon that served Morgoth in the First Age. The Dwarves of Moria dug too deep and woke it, and it killed their king and drove them out of their greatest city. It’s the strongest thing the Fellowship ever fights, and it took Gandalf’s death to stop it.
5. Saruman

Saruman was the head of Gandalf’s order and the leader of the White Council. His most dangerous weapon is his voice, which can talk kings and armies into almost anything. He bred the Uruk-hai, sent an army to Helm’s Deep and, by using a palantír, ended up serving Sauron while thinking he was his rival. Once Gandalf came back as the White, Saruman was clearly outmatched.
6. The Witch-king of Angmar

The Lord of the Nazgûl stabbed Frodo with a Morgul blade on Weathertop, rode through the broken gate of Minas Tirith and killed King Théoden. An old prophecy said no man would kill him, and that held: Éowyn did it, with Merry’s help. Of all the servants of Sauron who aren’t Maiar, he’s the deadliest.
7. Smaug

Smaug took the Lonely Mountain from the Dwarves single-handedly and slept on its treasure for more than a century. When the company woke him, he burned Lake-town before a single black arrow from Bard brought him down. Among the creatures of the Third Age, only the Balrog is clearly stronger.
8. Elrond

Elrond bears Vilya, the mightiest of the three Elven Rings, and his power protects Rivendell. When the Nazgûl chased Frodo to the Ford of Bruinen, it was Elrond who called up the flood that swept them away, with Gandalf adding the shapes of white horses in the water. He also fought in the Last Alliance against Sauron.
9. Glorfindel

Book readers know Glorfindel as the Elf-lord who rode out to find Frodo; the films gave that scene to Arwen. Tolkien later decided he was the same Glorfindel who killed a Balrog at the fall of Gondolin in the First Age and was sent back from the dead. The Nazgûl fled from him, and Gandalf explains that Elves who have lived in the Blessed Realm have great power against the Ringwraiths.
10. Treebeard

Treebeard is the oldest of the Ents, and once he finally decides to go to war, the Ents tear Isengard apart in a single night. An angry forest of Huorns wiped out the orcs who fled Helm’s Deep.
11. Shelob

Shelob is the last child of Ungoliant, the spider that helped Morgoth destroy the Two Trees of Valinor. She’s older than Sauron’s rule in Mordor, she serves no one, and only the Phial of Galadriel and Sting saved Sam and Frodo from her lair.
12. Aragorn

Aragorn is the strongest Man in the story, and not just with a sword. In the book he took control of the palantír of Orthanc away from Sauron himself and showed him Andúril, which is part of why Sauron rushed his attack on Minas Tirith. He also summoned the Army of the Dead to fight for him.
13. Éowyn

Éowyn rode to war in disguise and faced the Witch-king alone after he struck down her uncle, Théoden. With Merry stabbing him from behind, she killed the one enemy no man could kill.
14. Legolas

In the book, Legolas shot a Nazgûl’s winged mount out of the night sky over the Anduin with one arrow. In the films he takes down an oliphaunt on his own and keeps up with Gandalf, Aragorn and Gimli in every big battle.
15. Gimli

Gimli won his kill count with Legolas at Helm’s Deep, 42 to 41. He’s as tough as any Dwarf in the story, and his Magic card is even called Gimli, Counter of Kills.
