Quick answer: The strongest Avatar character is Aang in the Avatar State. At the end of The Last Airbender he beat a comet-powered Fire Lord Ozai with all four elements, then took Ozai’s firebending away with energybending. Korra is a very close second. The strongest villain is Unalaq once he fused with Vaatu to become the Dark Avatar, and the strongest bender who never had a spirit’s help is Fire Lord Ozai during Sozin’s Comet.

How we ranked them: each character at their peak, judged only by what they actually do on screen in Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Raava and Vaatu are left out because they’re spirits, not benders. Unalaq counts because he’s a person who fused with one. For the original-series characters we show their Magic: The Gathering card from the official Avatar set; tap a card to see its price.

1. Aang (in the Avatar State)

No one in the franchise has a better single fight than Aang’s last one. In “Sozin’s Comet,” Fire Lord Ozai had the comet’s full power behind him, and he still lost. Once Aang’s Avatar State unlocked, he wrapped himself in a sphere of air, water, earth and fire and took the fight apart. Then he did something nobody else in the show can do: he used energybending, which the lion turtle taught him, to take Ozai’s firebending away for good.
He mastered all four elements by the age of 12, too. Korra might match his raw power, but Aang’s peak is the cleanest win on this list.
2. Korra

Korra could bend water, earth and fire as a little kid, and her peak is even bigger than Aang’s in scale. At Harmonic Convergence she fought the Dark Avatar as a giant spirit. In the final battle with Kuvira, she stopped a blast from Kuvira’s spirit-energy cannon in the Avatar State, and the energy tore open a brand-new spirit portal in the middle of Republic City.
She also fought Zaheer in the Avatar State while poisoned with mercury and chained. She lands at No. 2 because her biggest wins needed help: she only found Raava again with Jinora’s help, and she lost her link to every past Avatar along the way.
3. Unalaq (the Dark Avatar)

On his own, Unalaq is a strong waterbender who can calm or darken spirits. What puts him at No. 3 is Harmonic Convergence: he fused with Vaatu, the spirit of chaos, and became the Dark Avatar. In that form he pulled Raava out of Korra and snuffed her light, which cut Korra off from every Avatar before her, and then marched on Republic City as a giant.
Only Korra beat him, and only after Raava came back. That’s a villain who nearly ended the Avatar for good.
4. Avatar Kyoshi

Kyoshi’s feat is the one geography teachers would hate. When Chin the Conqueror came for her home, she split the whole peninsula off the Earth Kingdom mainland and turned it into Kyoshi Island. Chin was still standing on the cliff when the land broke away. She also founded the Dai Li to protect Ba Sing Se.
5. Avatar Roku

In “The Avatar and the Fire Lord,” Roku confronts his old best friend Sozin after Sozin starts taking land in the Earth Kingdom. In the Avatar State he tears through the Fire Nation palace, beats Sozin and spares him. His power even outlived him: in “Winter Solstice,” his spirit works through Aang to destroy the Fire Sages’ temple on Crescent Island. He ranks below Kyoshi only because we see less of him at full strength.
6. Fire Lord Ozai

Ozai is the strongest bender who never had a spirit or the Avatar State on his side. During Sozin’s Comet he named himself the Phoenix King, flew on jets of fire, planned to burn the Earth Kingdom to the ground and had Aang running for most of their fight. He also threw lightning at Aang mid-battle. It took the Avatar State to stop him.
7. Zaheer

Zaheer only became an airbender after Harmonic Convergence, and he still reached a level almost no airbender ever has. After P’Li died, he let go of his last earthly attachment and learned to fly, something only the legendary Guru Laghima had done. He killed the Earth Queen by pulling the air from her lungs, and he poisoned Korra with mercury to force her into the Avatar State so he could end the Avatar cycle.
8. Amon

Amon, whose real name is Noatak, is the scariest bender on this list, and he barely looks like one. He could bloodbend without a full moon and use it to take someone’s bending away for good. He did exactly that to Korra in “Endgame,” taking her water, earth and fire before her airbending finally broke through. He’s this low only because his power is one trick: an amazing trick, but one trick.
9. Kuvira

Kuvira is the best fighter among the Korra villains. A metalbending master from Zaofu, she took over most of the Earth Kingdom, built a giant mech with a spirit-energy cannon and beat Korra in their first fight, though Korra was still recovering at the time. Without the mech she’s a little below Zaheer and Amon, but not by much.
10. Toph Beifong

Toph is the best pure earthbender in the franchise. She’s blind and sees through vibrations in the ground, she invented metalbending to escape a metal box, and she went on to found Republic City’s metalbending police. In The Legend of Korra, an older Toph can sense what’s happening far beyond her swamp through its roots. She’d be higher if she’d ever had a fight on the scale of the people above her.
11. Azula

Azula is the most dangerous person in the original series who isn’t the Avatar or the Fire Lord. Her fire burns blue, she throws lightning at will, and she took Ba Sing Se from the inside with the Dai Li, a city that stood up to a 600-day siege. She only lost her last fight because she was coming apart, and even then it took Zuko and Katara together.
12. Iroh

The Dragon of the West invented lightning redirection by studying how waterbenders move, then taught it to Zuko. He breathes fire, broke himself out of a Fire Nation prison, and led the Order of the White Lotus when they took Ba Sing Se back. Iroh would probably rank higher if he ever wanted to fight.
13. King Bumi

Aang’s old friend is a mad genius and a terrifying earthbender. During the eclipse, when firebenders lost their power, he took back the whole city of Omashu by himself. He later fought alongside Iroh and the White Lotus to free Ba Sing Se.
14. Katara

Katara went from self-taught to a waterbending master in a single season and learned bloodbending from Hama. She’s the one who actually beat Azula, pinning her down with water and chaining her to a grate. By The Legend of Korra she’s the best healer in the world.
15. Zuko

Zuko rounds out the list. He redirected his father’s lightning on the Day of Black Sun, relearned firebending from the dragons Ran and Shaw, and took a bolt of Azula’s lightning to save Katara. He’s not the strongest firebender in his own family, but he’s the one who beat the odds every time it counted.
Honorable mentions
- Avatar Wan: the first Avatar, who fought Vaatu at Harmonic Convergence 10,000 years before Korra.
- P’Li: the Red Lotus combustionbender who blew up targets with a blast from her third eye.
- Hama: the waterbender who invented bloodbending in a Fire Nation prison.
- Combustion Man: Zuko’s hired assassin, who nearly took out Team Avatar more than once.
What about Pavi and Nisha?
It’s too early to rank the new twin Avatars from Avatar: Seven Havens. Book 1 ends with Pavi opening her first chakra and Nisha learning that her fear created the anomaly, and the creators told GamesRadar+ that both twins can energybend. Our Seven Havens Book 1 ending explained covers what that means for Book 2. Tagah, the villain of the new Aang movie, isn’t on the list either; one movie isn’t enough to place him.
