You only need two movies before Dune: Part Three: Dune (2021, 2 hours 35 minutes) and Dune: Part Two (2024, 2 hours 46 minutes), about 5 hours 20 minutes in total. Part Three opens December 18, 2026, in IMAX first. It adapts Frank Herbert’s second novel, Dune Messiah (1969), and picks up 17 years after Part Two. Reading the book is optional, but it’s the one to pick if you read anything.

Updated November 3, 2026 · Release details from Warner Bros. and the film’s official trailers. Spoiler warning: the recaps below cover the first two films, not Part Three.

Dune (2021): what you need to remember

House Atreides is ordered to take over Arrakis, the desert planet that’s the only source of spice, the most valuable substance in the universe. It’s a trap. The Harkonnens attack with the Emperor’s own Sardaukar soldiers, Duke Leto is betrayed and killed, and his son Paul escapes into the desert with his mother, Lady Jessica.

Two moments matter for Part Three. Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) dies holding off the Sardaukar so Paul and Jessica can get away. And Paul joins the Fremen, the desert people of Arrakis, after killing Jamis in a duel, and meets Chani, the woman from his visions.

Dune: Part Two (2024): what you need to remember

Paul lives as a Fremen, falls in love with Chani and rises as Muad’Dib. Many Fremen believe he’s their prophesied messiah, a belief the Bene Gesserit planted long ago and Jessica deliberately spreads. After Paul drinks the Water of Life, he sees every possible future, and in all of them his name is used to start a holy war across the universe.

At the end, Paul kills Feyd-Rautha in a duel, forces the Emperor to give up the throne and claims Princess Irulan as his wife. When the Great Houses refuse to accept him, he sends the Fremen to war. Chani, who never believed the prophecy, walks away and calls a sandworm.

What’s new in Dune: Part Three

The film jumps 17 years ahead. Paul is now Emperor, the holy war has been fought in his name, and he’s trapped by the future he saw. Chani is still at his side, and Irulan (Florence Pugh) is now his wife.

  • Robert Pattinson joins as Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, a shapeshifter who can take on other people’s faces.
  • Jason Momoa is back, but as Hayt, a ghola: a living copy of Duncan Idaho grown from his body after his death.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy plays a grown-up Alia, Paul’s sister, who appeared in Part Two only as a vision.
  • Returning: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Charlotte Rampling.

Villeneuve wrote the script with Brian K. Vaughan, and reports say it changes parts of the book, so even readers may not know every turn. It’s also his first film shot partly on IMAX film cameras, and IMAX theaters get it for the first three weeks.

Should you read Dune Messiah first?

You don’t have to, but it’s the most useful thing to read before December 18. It’s much shorter than Dune and picks up 12 years after the first book ends. Herbert wrote it to show the dark side of Paul’s rise: the first book’s hero becomes a ruler whose name is behind a galaxy-wide war, and the story is about whether he can escape that. If you want to keep going, Children of Dune (1976) comes next.

Optional extras (none required)

  • Dune: Prophecy (HBO, 2024): a prequel series set 10,000 years before Paul, about the founding of the Bene Gesserit. Season 2 has no official date yet.
  • Dune (1984): David Lynch’s version of the first book. It’s a fun curiosity, not a prequel to the new films.
  • Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003): the Sci Fi Channel miniseries. Children of Dune adapts Dune Messiah, so skip it if you don’t want Part Three spoiled.
  • Jodorowsky’s Dune (2013): a documentary about the wild 1970s adaptation that never got made.

“Dunesday”: the same day as Avengers: Doomsday
