“Strongest Pokémon” gets thrown around a lot, usually backed by nothing more than vibes and a cool design. We’re doing this one differently: every entry below is ranked by base stat total (BST) — the sum of a Pokémon’s six core stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed) as set by Game Freak. It’s the same number competitive players use as a baseline measure of raw power, and it’s fully verifiable against the games themselves.

How We’re Ranking “Strongest” Here
Base stat total isn’t the only way to measure a Pokémon’s power — movepool, abilities, and typing all matter in an actual battle — but it’s the only measure that’s an objective, published number rather than an opinion. We’re using each Pokémon’s highest legally accessible form (Mega Evolutions, Primal Reversions, and other in-game forms included) and ranking by standard competition rules: tied stat totals share a rank, and the next rank skips accordingly. One battle-only exception is addressed separately near the end.
#9: Kyurem (Black) and Kyurem (White) — 700 BST

Kyurem’s two DNA-splice fusions round out the top 10 at 700 BST each. Black Kyurem fuses with Zekrom and leans into raw Attack, while White Kyurem fuses with Reshiram and pushes Special Attack instead — same total, opposite play style. They’re tied with a genuinely large group of other Pokémon at exactly 700, including several Mega Evolutions covered below.
#8: Zygarde, Complete Forme — 708 BST

Zygarde’s Complete Forme is the reward for reassembling all of its Cells and Cores in Pokémon Sun & Moon. At 708 BST it edges out the 700-tier entirely on its own, powered by the signature move Core Enforcer and a stat spread built around brute-force Attack and Defense.
#7: Arceus — 720 BST

Arceus is the highest-BST Pokémon that isn’t a Mega Evolution, Primal Reversion, or special battle-only form — its 720 total is simply how it’s built. Its stats are spread perfectly evenly at 120 in every category, and its signature ability, Multitype, lets it change type to match whatever Plate it’s holding, making it one of the most flexible Pokémon in the franchise’s lore as the being credited with creating the Pokémon universe itself.
#6: Ultra Necrozma — 754 BST

Ultra Necrozma is what happens when Necrozma absorbs the Light That Burns the Sky by fusing with Solgaleo or Lunala in Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. At 754 BST it’s the single strongest non-Mega, non-Primal form outside of Arceus, headlined by a monstrous 191 Attack and 137 Speed.
#4: Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre — 770 BST

Introduced in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, Primal Reversion pushed Groudon and Kyogre past their already-massive Generation III stats to 770 BST apiece. Primal Groudon’s Desolate Land and Primal Kyogre’s Primordial Sea automatically summon extreme weather the instant they enter battle, and each punishes the other’s usual counters — Primal Groudon shuts down Water-type damage against it, Primal Kyogre shuts down Fire.
#1: Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Mewtwo Y — 780 BST

The top spot is a three-way tie at 780 BST, and all three belong to Pokémon that don’t even need a Mega Evolution to be considered legendary in their own right. Mega Mewtwo X becomes a Psychic/Fighting physical bruiser with 190 Attack. Mega Mewtwo Y goes the opposite direction, a pure Psychic special attacker with a staggering 194 Special Attack — one of the highest single-stat values ever printed. Mega Rayquaza splits the difference almost perfectly evenly across Attack and Special Attack, and uniquely doesn’t need a Mega Stone at all — it can Mega Evolve mid-battle just by knowing the move Dragon Ascent.
The Pokémon That Almost Made the List
The 700 BST tier is enormous, and Kyurem’s two fusions aren’t alone there. Mega Tyranitar, Mega Garchomp, Mega Salamence, Mega Metagross, Mega Latios, Mega Latias, and Mega Diancie all land on exactly 700 as well, and so do three Pokémon outside the Mega roster entirely: Zacian’s Crowned Sword form, Zamazenta’s Crowned Shield form, and Terapagos’s Stellar Form. None of them crack this top 10 only because so many other Pokémon share that same number. If you’re building a competitive team and 700 BST is your bar, that’s a lot of viable options to choose from.
What About Eternamax Eternatus?
Sharp-eyed readers will notice Eternatus is missing, despite its Eternamax Forme technically posting a jaw-dropping 1125 BST — nearly 350 points above anything on this list. That number is real, but Eternamax only exists as the final boss encounter in Pokémon Sword & Shield‘s story; it’s not a form any player can ever capture, use in a team, or bring into battle. Because it’s not a legally accessible Pokémon in the way everything else on this list is, we’re treating it as a fun fact rather than a genuine entry.
Are Mega Evolutions Even Relevant in 2026?
Very much so. Mega Evolution made a full comeback in 2025’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which introduced dozens of new Mega forms on top of the classics, and the mechanic carried over into Pokémon Champions, the game positioned as Pokémon’s next major competitive platform. Half of this list — Mega Rayquaza and both Mega Mewtwo forms — is just as relevant to competitive play today as it was when these Megas first launched.
Final Verdict
By the numbers, there’s no single “strongest Pokémon” so much as a three-way tie at the top: Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Mewtwo Y all cap out at 780 BST, with Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre close behind at 770. What stands out looking at the full list is how much of it is temporary power — Megas, Primals, and Ultra Necrozma all require a specific in-battle trigger to reach these numbers. Arceus is the only entry here that’s simply born this strong, no transformation required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the strongest Pokémon by base stat total?
It’s a three-way tie at 780 BST between Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Mewtwo Y — all Mega Evolutions of already-legendary Pokémon.
What’s the strongest Pokémon that isn’t a Mega Evolution or Primal form?
Arceus, at 720 BST, evenly split at 120 in every stat. It’s the strongest Pokémon in its base, unmodified form.
Is Eternamax Eternatus really the strongest Pokémon ever?
By raw numbers, its 1125 BST dwarfs everything else, but it’s a battle-only story form from Pokémon Sword & Shield that players can never actually own or use in a team, so it’s usually excluded from “strongest Pokémon” rankings.
Are Mega Evolutions still used in competitive Pokémon?
Yes. Mega Evolution returned in 2025’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A and carried over into Pokémon Champions, the platform positioned as Pokémon’s next major competitive scene.
