Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated video game in history. After more than a decade since GTA V launched in 2013, Rockstar Games is finally returning to Vice City with a massive new open world, a groundbreaking dual-protagonist system, and a satirical lens trained squarely on modern American culture. The game arrives November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S — and it is shaping up to be the defining release of this console generation.

This guide covers everything confirmed so far: the release date, platforms, map, characters, gameplay mechanics, price, and what to expect from one of the most ambitious games ever made.

Release Date, Platforms & Price

GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game was originally scheduled for May 26, 2026, but Rockstar pushed it to the holiday window to allow additional polish time — a decision that caused massive waves online but is consistent with the studio’s philosophy of releasing only when the game is truly ready.

A PC version has not been announced. Based on Rockstar’s history — GTA V took two years to come to PC after its console launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took one year — a PC release is expected sometime in 2027 or 2028. If you want to play day one, you’ll need a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.

  • Launch date: November 19, 2026
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
  • PC: Not yet announced (expected 2027–2028)
  • Price: Expected $79.99 standard / $99.99+ special editions
  • Developer: Rockstar Games
  • Publisher: Rockstar Games / Take-Two Interactive

The Setting: State of Leonida and Vice City

Vice City returns — the Miami-inspired metropolis is just one part of Leonida’s sprawling open world.

GTA VI takes place in the State of Leonida, Rockstar’s fictionalized version of Florida. The map is significantly larger than GTA V’s Los Santos, encompassing multiple distinct regions:

  • Vice City — The Miami-inspired coastal metropolis. Neon-soaked streets, Art Deco architecture, yacht clubs, and strip malls. The beating heart of Leonida.
  • Grassrivers — Rockstar’s take on the Florida Everglades. Swampy backwater towns, alligators, hunting grounds, and the kind of rural Florida that makes headlines for all the wrong reasons.
  • The Leonida Keys — A chain of islands inspired by the Florida Keys. Highway bridges stretching over turquoise water, dive bars, fishing, and extreme wealth cheek-by-jowl with poverty.
  • Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn — Additional regions that flesh out the state’s geography, from national park wilderness to working-class port towns.

What makes Leonida distinctive is how thoroughly Rockstar has embedded 2020s American culture into every corner of it. Social media influencers film content in the streets. Police officers wear body cameras that become plot devices. Florida Man-style meme culture is woven into NPCs, radio stations, and mission design. The world doesn’t just look like Florida — it feels like Florida, in every absurd, sun-baked, chaotic detail.

The Protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos

GTA VI introduces two playable protagonists for the first time since GTA V’s three-character system, and it marks a series first: Lucia Caminos is the first female playable protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game.

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are a romantic criminal couple — think Bonnie and Clyde filtered through a Florida crime drama. Their dynamic is central to the story, and unlike GTA V’s relatively separate character arcs, Jason and Lucia’s fates are tightly intertwined from the opening act.

  • Jason Duval — A Leonida local with deep roots in the state’s criminal underworld. Pragmatic, resourceful, and dangerously capable.
  • Lucia Caminos — The series’ first female lead. Sharp, driven, and willing to do whatever it takes. Her perspective gives GTA VI a dimension the franchise has never had before.

Players will switch between the two characters depending on story context and mission design. Rockstar has not confirmed whether free-roaming character-switching (as in GTA V) will be available outside of missions, but given the game’s expanded world, it is widely expected.

Gameplay: What’s New in GTA VI

Beyond the expanded map and dual protagonists, GTA VI introduces several new mechanics that reflect the game’s satirical take on modern life:

Social Media Integration

Social media is woven into the game world. NPCs film incidents on their phones, content goes viral within the game’s fictional internet, and certain missions will involve managing — or exploiting — viral attention. The franchise’s signature media satire has been updated from the cable TV and talk radio of previous games to the algorithmic chaos of modern platforms.

Modern Law Enforcement

Police in Leonida operate with contemporary tools: body cameras, surveillance drones, and forensic-style investigation mechanics. The wanted system has been rebuilt to reflect modern policing, including the ability for evidence you leave behind to be used against you. This adds a new layer of tactical thinking to both missions and free-roam.

Expanded World Interactivity

Based on everything shown in Trailers 1 and 2, Leonida features a level of world detail that goes well beyond GTA V. Weather systems affect gameplay. Flooding occurs in low-lying areas. NPCs have persistent routines and react dynamically to the player’s reputation and actions. The game appears to borrow environmental storytelling techniques from Red Dead Redemption 2 and apply them to an urban setting.

Online: GTA VI Online

Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI will have an online multiplayer component. Given that GTA Online generated billions of dollars across 13 years, GTA VI Online is expected to be massive — and it will likely launch alongside or shortly after the single-player game, unlike GTA Online which launched weeks after GTA V.

The Development Journey

GTA VI was formally revealed with Trailer 1 in December 2023 — a trailer that broke records within hours of its release, racking up tens of millions of views before Rockstar had even officially scheduled it. The reveal confirmed the Vice City setting, the dual-protagonist system, and Lucia as the franchise’s first female lead.

Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025, accompanied by over 70 official 4K screenshots showcasing Vice City’s streets, the Leonida Keys, the supporting cast, and the world’s incredible visual fidelity. The screenshots made it clear that Rockstar had spent its 12-year development window building something genuinely next-generation — a game world with a level of environmental detail that makes GTA V look like a rough draft.

The game was originally set for May 26, 2026 before Rockstar announced a delay to the holiday window, citing the need for additional development time. Given the studio’s track record — GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 are widely considered among the greatest games ever made — the extra months are unlikely to disappoint.

Should You Pre-Order GTA VI?

Rockstar’s track record makes this one of the safest pre-orders in gaming history. GTA V was a generational masterpiece. Red Dead Redemption 2 was a generational masterpiece. If there is one studio in the industry that has earned the benefit of the doubt, it is Rockstar Games.

That said, pre-order bonuses have not yet been confirmed. Special editions, early access incentives, and bonus in-game content will almost certainly be announced in the months before the November launch. If you want to lock in launch-day access, pre-ordering from your platform’s digital store is the safest option — physical availability on launch day is never guaranteed for titles this large.

GTA VI is not a question of if it will be good. The question is whether the real world can possibly live up to 12 years of anticipation. Based on everything Rockstar has shown, the answer looks like yes.
