What is Jumanji: Open World about?
The two reboot films pulled teenagers into a video game. This one flips it. Sony’s official synopsis says that this time Jumanji “breaks free of its console, unleashing its chaos into our world.”
The trailer shows Bravestone, Shelly, Mouse and Ruby loose in the real world in “demo mode,” running on autopilot with nobody controlling them. Video game rules still seem to apply: in one shot Bravestone gets hit by a truck, bursts into pixels and respawns. Spencer looks like he’s at the center of how it happened, and the crew appears to head back into the game to put things right.
Jake Kasdan, who directed both reboot films, directs again from a script he wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, and Henry Jackman is back on the score. Sony is selling it as the end of the story, with the tagline “One. Last. Game.”
Is there a Jumanji: Open World trailer?
Yes. Sony released the first official trailer on July 28, 2026, after showing footage to theater owners at CinemaCon in April. You can watch it on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s YouTube channel.
Why did Jumanji: Open World move to Christmas?
At December 11, its second weekend would have run straight into Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, which both open December 18. Christmas Day gives it the holiday break instead, the same stretch that worked for this series before: Welcome to the Jungle opened December 20, 2017 and kept climbing through the holidays to about $962 million worldwide. The two reboot films made more than $1.7 billion combined.

What to watch before Jumanji: Open World
- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017). Introduces Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha and the avatars they get stuck in.
- Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). Adds Grandpa Eddie and Ming, and its credits scene, with Jumanji ostriches stampeding through town, already hinted at the game spilling into the real world.
- Jumanji (1995). Optional, but the Robin Williams original is where the “game breaks into our world” idea started.
