Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth. The Hobbit, the second Universes Beyond set built around Tolkien’s world, lands on shelves August 14, 2026 — and early spoilers already have Bilbo, Smaug, and the Company of Dwarves stealing the show.
Here’s everything confirmed so far.

The Story
The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and the Company of Dwarves as they journey to reclaim Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. It’s Wizards’ second Middle-earth set, following 2023’s The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.
What Cards Have Been Spoiled?
As of the most recent previews, confirmed cards include:
- Smaug, the Magnificent
- The One Ring
- The Arkenstone
- Thorin, Mountain-king
- Bilbo, Luckwearer
- Bilbo, Thief in the Night
- An Unexpected Party
- My Precious
- Riddles in the Dark
- Tom, Bert, and William (the trolls)
- Wood Elves
- Arcane Signet

Expect heavy representation from hobbits, dwarves, goblins, elves, and dragons, with treasure tokens likely playing a central role — fitting for a story about reclaiming a dragon’s hoard. The Adventure mechanic, introduced in Throne of Eldraine, is confirmed as a returning theme, which tracks neatly with a book full of side-quests and riddles.

Why It Matters
Tales of Middle-earth was one of the best-selling Magic sets ever printed, driven largely by The One Ring becoming a multi-format staple. With The Hobbit reintroducing The One Ring alongside Smaug and a prequel story fans already love, expect this to be one of the most-preordered sets of 2026 — and expect prices on early chase cards, especially that roughly 500-copy Gleaming Gold Smaug, to spike hard around prerelease weekend.
