What is Dune: Part Three about?

It’s set nearly two decades after Paul seized the Imperium. Paul is now a ruthless Emperor facing the consequences of his reign, while old allies return, new enemies plot against him, and he’s haunted by visions of the Empire collapsing.

The source is Dune Messiah (1969), Herbert’s second Dune novel. The film stretches the book’s 12-year time jump to 17 years. Villeneuve co-wrote the script with Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man), and Timothée Chalamet has said this is the film that takes the most creative liberties with the books.

Villeneuve has called it “more action-packed and tense” than his earlier films, and he has said it will be his last Dune movie.

Is there a Dune: Part Three trailer?

Yes. The first trailer arrived on March 17, 2026, and debuted Pattinson’s Scytale. A full trailer followed in early July. A short preview also played before IMAX 70mm screenings of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey this summer.

Should you see Dune: Part Three in IMAX?

If you can, yes. Unlike the first two films, which were shot digitally, Part Three was shot mainly on 65mm film, with select sequences on IMAX film cameras. Desert scenes used IMAX-certified digital cameras.

The catch is getting a seat. IMAX 70mm tickets went on sale at 19 locations in April 2026 and sold out within minutes, and the wider August presale crashed ticketing sites. If you want 70mm, check your nearest IMAX 70mm theater now. Otherwise, regular IMAX or Dolby a week or two after opening is easier to book.

Why are Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday out the same day?

Both open on December 18, 2026. IMAX gave its three-week exclusive window to Dune, so Doomsday plays in other premium formats first. If you’re planning a double feature that weekend, book Dune in IMAX and Doomsday in Dolby or a standard showing. Our what to watch before Doomsday guide covers the Marvel side.

What to watch or read before Dune: Part Three

  • Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Part Three picks up from the end of Part Two, so rewatch at least the second film.
  • Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert. It’s the shortest of Herbert’s original Dune novels, so it’s an easy weekend read, but expect spoilers for the film (with a 12-year gap instead of the movie’s 17).

What we don’t know yet

  • The runtime and rating
  • Whether there will be a final trailer before release
  • When it reaches digital rental and streaming

We’ll update this page as each one is confirmed.
