Short answer: The best Fantastic Four precon upgrades are Swords to Plowshares (in 44% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC) and the main-set versions of the rest of the family: Human Torch, Johnny Storm, Invisible Woman, Sue Storm and The Thing, Ben Grimm, which cost about 55 cents for all three. The rest of the list fixes the four-color mana. All 10 adds cost about $37.12 on TCGplayer, and they replace the 10 precon cards players cut most often, starting with Dragon Man and Negative Zone Portal.

Who this is for: You own The Fantastic Four precon, or you’re about to buy it (about $38 on TCGplayer, the cheapest of the four Marvel decks right now), and you want upgrades that fix its biggest problem: four colors of mana. Every swap below is one-for-one. We ranked this deck fourth of four out of the box because of that mana in all 4 Marvel Super Heroes precons, ranked. It also has the highest ceiling once it’s fixed.
How does the Fantastic Four deck win?
The deck comes with all four members as foil commanders, and you pick one to lead. Mister Fantastic ({2}{U}, 2/4, reach and vigilance) is the most popular: EDHREC has 2,188 Mister Fantastic decks, about twice as many as The Thing (1,143) or Invisible Woman (1,083). At the beginning of combat on your turn, if you’ve cast a noncreature spell this turn, he draws you a card. For {R}{G}{W}{U} and a tap, he copies a triggered ability you control twice.
The other three work the same way. Cast a noncreature spell before combat, and Invisible Woman makes a 0/3 Wall, Human Torch gets flying, double strike and haste, and The Thing gets four +1/+1 counters. Their extra abilities also cost {R}{G}{W}{U}. So the best upgrades are cheap noncreature spells, mana that makes all four colors, and more Heroes that reward the family for working together.
What are the best Fantastic Four upgrades?
Here are the 10 cards to add, ranked by how many Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC play them. None of them come in the precon. Click any card to check its price on TCGplayer.
1. Swords to Plowshares

What it does: Exile target creature. Its controller gains life equal to its power.
Why it fits the team: The most-played add in Mister Fantastic decks. It’s also a one-mana noncreature spell, so casting it before combat turns on the combat bonus of every Fantastic Four commander you have out that turn. The version shown has Marvel art from the Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks, with Hawkeye on the flavor text.
Play rate and price: In 44% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $1.25 for the cheapest printing (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
2. Human Torch, Johnny Storm

What it does: Flying. Whenever you draw a card, if you control another Hero, he deals 1 damage to target opponent. Power-up {6}{R}: put three +1/+1 counters on him (once, and cheaper if he entered this turn).
Why it fits the team: Mister Fantastic draws you extra cards and is a Hero himself, so with both out, every card you draw pings an opponent. It’s a different card from the precon’s Human Torch, so you can play both. It costs 20 cents.
Play rate and price: In 34% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.20 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
3. Invisible Woman, Sue Storm

What it does: Lifelink. Whenever you put one or more +1/+1 counters on other Heroes you control, you may create a 0/4 Wall creature token with defender.
Why it fits the team: The precon’s Thing puts four counters on himself every turn you cast a noncreature spell first, and both versions of The Thing grow during the game. Each time, Sue gives you another wall to hide behind.
Play rate and price: In 32% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.21 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
4. The Thing, Ben Grimm

What it does: Trample. Whenever one or more Heroes you control deal damage to a player, put two +1/+1 counters on him.
Why it fits the team: A 7/7 trampler for 14 cents that keeps growing. Even Human Torch, Johnny Storm’s 1-damage pings count, since he’s a Hero dealing damage to a player.
Play rate and price: In 32% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.14 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
5. Birds of Paradise

What it does: Flying. {T}: Add one mana of any color.
Why it fits the team: All four of the precon’s commanders have abilities that cost {R}{G}{W}{U}, so you need every color fast. Birds makes any color from turn two. The cheapest printing comes from the Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks.
Play rate and price: In 31% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $7.38 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
6. Nature’s Lore

What it does: Search your library for a Forest card and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
Why it fits the team: It finds any land with the Forest type, so with a dual like Temple Garden in the deck it fetches a second color, and the land enters untapped. It’s a cheap noncreature spell too.
Play rate and price: In 29% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.10 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
7. Heroic Intervention

What it does: Permanents you control gain hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.
Why it fits the team: Saves your whole board from a wipe. The version shown, from the Marvel Universe set with art by Jack Kirby and Don Heck, also happens to be the cheapest printing.
Play rate and price: In 28% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $9.23 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
8. Bloom Tender

What it does: Vivid: {T}: For each color among permanents you control, add one mana of that color.
Why it fits the team: Once you have permanents of all four colors out, which the four mono-colored commanders make easy, it taps for {R}{G}{W}{U}: exactly what their abilities cost. It’s the priciest add, so buy it last if you’re on a budget.
Play rate and price: In 28% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $13.29 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
9. Faeburrow Elder

What it does: Vigilance. It gets +1/+1 for each color among permanents you control. {T}: For each color among permanents you control, add one mana of that color.
Why it fits the team: A budget Bloom Tender that also grows into a 4/4 vigilance body in a four-color deck. It costs less than 50 cents.
Play rate and price: In 25% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.49 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
10. Counterspell

What it does: Counter target spell.
Why it fits the team: Two mana to stop a board wipe or a game-winning spell. Like the rest of your cheap instants, it’s also a noncreature spell, which counts if you cast it before combat on your turn.
Play rate and price: In 23% of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.83 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

Which cards should you cut from The Fantastic Four?
These are the 10 precon cards that the fewest Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC still play. Most of them are slow, help your opponents, or don’t fit a deck that wants cheap noncreature spells.
| Cut | Still played in | Why it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Man, Reformed Robot | 15% | Four mana for a flier whose power depends on your biggest noncreature card, so it’s often small. |
| Negative Zone Portal | 16% | Slow graveyard hate, with a coin flip that can send it away. |
| Path of Discovery | 21% | Only works when creatures enter, and this deck wants noncreature spells. |
| Cut a Deal | 28% | Every opponent draws a card too. |
| Silver Surfer, Galactus’s Herald | 29% | Mostly there to find Galactus. |
| Galactus, Devourer of Worlds | 30% | Ten mana, and it has to attack the opponent with the most life every combat unless Silver Surfer is out. It’s worth about $4.77, so keep it in your binder. |
| Mirage Mirror | 32% | You pay {2} every time to copy something, and it only lasts until end of turn. |
| Collective Effort | 32% | Flexible, but each extra mode costs you a tapped creature you’d rather attack or block with. |
| Ultimate Nullification | 33% | You have to sacrifice a legendary creature to cast it, and it exiles your creatures too. |
| Willie Lumpkin, Postman | 34% | Every time he connects, that opponent can draw a card too. |
“Still played in” is the share of Mister Fantastic decks on EDHREC that kept the card. A low number means most players took it out.
Which lands should you upgrade?
The precon fetches basics with Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds, which is slow in a four-color deck. Swap them for two duals that can enter untapped:
| Add | Why | Price | Cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hallowed Fountain | White-blue dual that can enter untapped. In 30% of Mister Fantastic decks. | $7.13 | Terramorphic Expanse |
| Temple Garden | Green-white dual that can enter untapped, and Nature’s Lore can fetch it. In 29%. | $5.87 | Evolving Wilds |
Keep Baxter Building. For {4} and a tap it makes four mana in any combination of colors, which covers {R}{G}{W}{U} on its own. About two-thirds of Mister Fantastic decks keep it.
Two more cards worth a slot
- The Fantastic Four (about $6.50, in 14% of Mister Fantastic decks): the whole team on one four-color card. When it enters, and whenever you cast a spell with power, toughness or mana value 4, you pick a bonus you haven’t picked that turn: a 0/4 Wall, 3 damage to each opponent, two +1/+1 counters, or a card.
- Beast Within (about $0.61, in 22%): destroys any permanent at instant speed, and its controller gets a 3/3 Beast. Cheap, flexible removal that also counts as a noncreature spell.
Cut another low-play-rate card for each, such as Deep Analysis (34%) or Black Bolt, Inhuman King (38%).
