Disclosure: The Designcraft Studio sent us this box to review. We weren’t paid, and the opinions here are our own.

The Designcraft Studio’s 1-Row Wooden Card Storage Box is one of the nicest ways to store Commander decks we’ve seen. It’s built by hand in Tennessee, holds about 6 sleeved Commander decks, and the custom engraving on our lid came out crisp and detailed. Ours, in cherry with two latches and engraving, costs $103.95 with free US shipping. The 1-row starts at $89.95 in oak without engraving.

Prices checked October 26, 2026 on thedesigncraftstudio.com.

Who this is for: Commander players with a few decks to keep at home, collectors who want something nicer than a cardboard box, and anyone shopping for a personal, one-of-a-kind gift for a Magic fan.

What did we get?

The Designcraft Studio is a family shop in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where Mick Socall and his sons build every box by hand in red oak, maple or cherry. Ours is the 1-row box in cherry, with two antique brass latches and a custom engraving on the lid.

Designcraft rates it at 750+ sleeved cards, or about 6 sleeved Commander decks. Cherry starts out a light pinkish-tan, and Designcraft says it slowly deepens with age.

The custom engraving is the star

Every Designcraft engraving is designed from scratch for the customer. There are no stock images to pick from, and Designcraft sends a proof before anything gets engraved. For our box, they designed a dragon wrapped around the NerdSnack name, framed with Celtic knots in each corner.

The detail is excellent. The scales, wing membranes, claws and lettering are all sharp, and the burn is an even, rich brown against the light wood. It looks like a piece made for one person, which is exactly the point.

Engraving costs $10 extra and can go on the lid top or the inside of the lid. A player’s name, a playgroup logo or their favorite commander would all make great designs.

How well is it built?

Open the lid and you get one long compartment split into three sections by two dividers. Because the dividers move, you can size each section to fit a deck, a stack of tokens or your dice.

The grain runs cleanly along the sides and inside the lid, and the corners are neat and square. The two latches on the front keep the lid shut when you carry it.

Is it a good gift?

Yes, and it’s the kind of gift people keep for years. Every US order ships free by USPS Ground Advantage, and Mick told us Designcraft’s Christmas order-by date follows the date USPS uses to guarantee delivery by Christmas. He added that the family works extra hard during the holidays to get every gift under the tree in time. Because each engraving is designed and proofed first, order a little early if you want one engraved.

What to skip

  • If you only carry one deck to game night, a regular deck box is lighter and cheaper. Our best Commander deck boxes list starts at about $13.50 for a box that holds a full sleeved Commander deck.
  • If you store graded cards, skip it. Designcraft says slabs are almost always too big for its boxes.
  • If you want toploaders inside, the 1-row isn’t the one. Designcraft says only its 3-, 4- and 5-row boxes fit toploaders.
