1. Hearthhull, the Worldseed

Hearthhull, the Worldseed, a Jund commander in Magic: The Gathering
Edge of Eternities Commander mythic · 4 mana · Spacecraft

What it does: Station: tap another creature you control to put charge counters on Hearthhull equal to that creature’s power. With 2 or more counters, {1}, tap and sacrifice a land: draw two cards, and you may play an extra land this turn. With 8 or more, it becomes a 6/7 flier with vigilance and haste, and whenever you sacrifice a land, each opponent loses 2 life.

How the deck plays: A lands deck. Sacrifice lands for cards, play extra lands, then bring them all back from your graveyard. Once Hearthhull is fully stationed, every land you sacrifice drains each opponent for 2. It’s the most-built Jund commander on EDHREC, this month and all time.

Build around:

  • Splendid Reclamation ($0.36, in 89% of decks): returns every land in your graveyard to the battlefield
  • Exploration Broodship ($3.43, in 84% of decks): an extra land drop, and once it’s fully stationed you can cast permanents from your graveyard by sacrificing a land
  • Harrow ($0.34, in 82% of decks): sacrifices a land as part of its cost (a drain once Hearthhull is fully stationed) and puts two basic lands onto the battlefield

Popularity and price: 4,066 EDHREC decks in the past month (32,991 total, the most of any Jund commander). Market price $1.12 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

2. Henzie “Toolbox” Torre

Henzie “Toolbox” Torre, a Jund commander in Magic: The Gathering
New Capenna Commander mythic · {B}{R}{G} · 3/3

What it does: Each creature spell you cast with mana value 4 or greater has blitz, with a blitz cost equal to its mana cost. Blitzed creatures have haste and draw you a card when they die, and they’re sacrificed at end of turn. Blitz costs you pay cost {1} less for each time you’ve cast Henzie from the command zone.

How the deck plays: A big-creature deck that gets value from every creature. Blitz it in for a hasty attack, draw a card when it’s sacrificed, and pick creatures with strong enters or dies abilities so you get paid twice.

Build around:

  • Junji, the Midnight Sky ($0.55, in 79% of decks): a 5/5 flying Dragon that makes opponents discard or reanimates a creature when it dies, and blitz sacrifices it at end of turn, so you get that trigger and a card
  • Etali, Primal Storm ($0.45, in 66% of decks): with blitz’s haste it attacks right away and lets you cast free spells off the top of every library
  • Seedguide Ash ($0.80, in 63% of decks): blitz it, attack, and when it’s sacrificed it puts three Forests onto the battlefield

Popularity and price: 2,445 EDHREC decks in the past month (18,910 total). Market price $0.94 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

3. Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch, a Jund commander in Magic: The Gathering
Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander mythic · 4 mana · 4/4

What it does: Ward: blight 2 (to target her, a player puts two -1/-1 counters on a creature they control). Whenever one or more -1/-1 counters are put on a creature, draw a card if you control it. If you don’t, its controller loses 1 life.

How the deck plays: A -1/-1 counters deck. Put counters on your own creatures to draw cards and on opponents’ creatures to drain them, then wipe the board with counters and draw a pile of cards.

Build around:

  • Blowfly Infestation ($0.33, in 95% of decks): whenever a creature with a -1/-1 counter dies, put a counter on another creature, which chains into more cards or more life loss
  • Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons ($0.31, in 94% of decks): makes a 1/1 deathtouch Snake whenever you put -1/-1 counters on a creature
  • Necroskitter ($0.32, in 92% of decks): its wither damage adds counters, and opponents’ creatures that die with a counter come back under your control

Popularity and price: 2,143 EDHREC decks in the past month (20,421 total). Market price $0.33 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

4. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King

Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, a Jund commander in Magic: The Gathering
Edge of Eternities Commander mythic · 5 mana · 4/4 flier

What it does: Flying. Whenever Korvold enters or attacks, sacrifice another permanent. Whenever you sacrifice a permanent, put a +1/+1 counter on Korvold and draw a card.

How the deck plays: A sacrifice deck that turns every Treasure, Food and token into a card and a bigger Korvold. He’s also in 83% of Hearthhull decks.

Build around:

  • Mayhem Devil ($0.31, in 75% of decks): deals 1 damage to any target whenever anyone sacrifices a permanent, Treasure and Food included
  • Pitiless Plunderer ($3.06, in 54% of decks): makes a Treasure whenever another creature you control dies, and every Treasure is one more thing to sacrifice to Korvold
  • Deadly Dispute ($0.31, in 45% of decks): sacrifice a creature or artifact to draw two and make a Treasure, so one card gives Korvold two sacrifices

Popularity and price: 2,098 EDHREC decks in the past month (21,466 total). Market price $0.58 for the Edge of Eternities Commander reprint; the original Throne of Eldraine card is about $3.79 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

5. Eddie Brock

Eddie Brock, a Jund commander in Magic: The Gathering
Marvel’s Spider-Man mythic · 3 mana · transforms into Venom

What it does: When Eddie Brock enters, return a creature card with mana value 1 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. For {3}{B}{R}{G} he transforms into Venom, Lethal Protector, a 5/5 with menace, trample and haste. Whenever Venom attacks, you may sacrifice another creature to draw X cards, then put a permanent with mana value X or less from your hand onto the battlefield, where X is the sacrificed creature’s mana value.

How the deck plays: A sacrifice-and-cheat deck. Venom eats one of your big creatures each attack, draws that many cards, then puts something just as big onto the battlefield for free.

Build around:

  • Ghalta, Primal Hunger ($1.15, in 66% of decks): gets cheaper the more power you have on the battlefield, and sacrificing it to Venom draws 12 cards and lets you put a permanent with mana value 12 or less onto the battlefield
  • Anticausal Vestige ($2.60, in 60% of decks): draws a card and puts a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield when it leaves, so sacrificing it to Venom pays off twice
  • Riveteers Ascendancy ($0.52, in 58% of decks): brings back a smaller creature from your graveyard each time you sacrifice one

Popularity and price: 1,102 EDHREC decks in the past month (10,285 total). Market price $1.90 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

Why play Jund?

Jund is the sacrifice color combination. Black brings removal and reanimation, red brings damage and Treasure, and green brings ramp, lands and big creatures. It has no counterspells and not much plain card draw, so most Jund decks draw their cards by sacrificing things, like Korvold, Hearthhull and Venom.

It’s also cheap to get into. All five commanders cost under $2, and Auntie Ool’s three key cards add up to about $0.96.

Honorable mentions

  • Ziatora, the Incinerator (1,030 decks in the past month, 11,063 all time, about $0.40): a 6/6 flying Dragon. At the end of your turn, sacrifice a creature to deal damage equal to its power and make three Treasures.
  • Disa the Restless (905 decks, 12,462 all time, about $0.21): the Modern Horizons 3 precon commander. Lhurgoyfs that hit your graveyard from anywhere but the battlefield come back, and your combat damage makes Tarmogoyf tokens.
