1. Ms. Bumbleflower

What it does: Vigilance. Whenever you cast a spell, an opponent of your choice draws a card, and you put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, which gains flying until end of turn. The second time this resolves in a turn, you draw two cards.
How the deck plays: A friendly-looking spells deck. You hand out cards to opponents, but your second spell each turn draws you two, and every spell grows and gives flying to a threat. Most players add creatures that grow with every spell cast and every card drawn.
Build around:
- Wizard Class ($2.90, in 62% of decks): no maximum hand size, two cards at level 2, and a +1/+1 counter every time you draw at level 3
- Chasm Skulker ($0.35, in 53% of decks): grows with every card you draw, then splits into unblockable Squids when it dies
- Managorger Hydra ($0.37, in 51% of decks): gets a +1/+1 counter whenever any player casts a spell
Popularity and price: 3,460 EDHREC decks in the past month (37,645 total, the most of any Bant commander). Market price $8.14 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
2. Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian

What it does: At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may move a counter from one of your creatures to another. Cheer: once each turn, when your creatures with counters deal combat damage to a player, you may draw a card and proliferate.
How the deck plays: A +1/+1 counters deck that attacks every turn. Move counters to whichever creature can get through, connect, then draw and proliferate to grow the whole team again.
Build around:
- Hardened Scales ($1.69, in 89% of decks): one extra +1/+1 counter every time
- Walking Ballista ($5.45, in 71% of decks): turns spare counters into damage
- Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus ($1.88, in 52% of decks): makes every proliferate happen twice
Popularity and price: 2,477 EDHREC decks in the past month (22,315 total). Market price $2.78 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
3. Helga, Skittish Seer

What it does: Whenever you cast a creature spell with mana value 4 or more, you draw a card, gain 1 life and put a +1/+1 counter on Helga. She taps for X mana of one color, where X is her power, but only for creatures with mana value 4 or more or with {X} in their cost.
How the deck plays: A big-creatures ramp deck. Every big creature grows Helga, and a bigger Helga makes more mana for the next one, so the deck snowballs.
Build around:
- Garruk’s Uprising ($0.41, in 57% of decks): trample for your team, and a card for every big creature
- Beast Whisperer ($5.52, in 55% of decks): a card for every creature spell
- Hydroid Krasis ($0.32, in 49% of decks): an {X} creature, so Helga’s mana can pay for the X
Popularity and price: 2,358 EDHREC decks in the past month (20,614 total). Market price $3.43 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
4. Galadriel, Light of Valinor

What it does: Alliance: whenever another creature enters under your control, choose one you haven’t chosen this turn: add {G}{G}{G}, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, or scry 2 and draw a card.
How the deck plays: An Elves deck. The first three creatures you play each turn give you mana, a team-wide counter and a card, so cheap Elves turn into a big board fast.
Build around:
- Arwen, Weaver of Hope ($4.68, in 54% of decks): your other creatures enter with extra +1/+1 counters
- Elvish Archdruid ($0.49, in 51% of decks): pumps your Elves and taps for {G} per Elf
- Elvish Warmaster ($3.56, in 45% of decks): makes an Elf token whenever other Elves enter
Popularity and price: 1,971 EDHREC decks in the past month (17,321 total). Market price $27.46, the priciest commander on this list (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
5. Arcades, the Strategist

What it does: Flying, vigilance. Whenever a creature with defender enters under your control, you draw a card. Your creatures with defender deal combat damage equal to their toughness and can attack anyway.
How the deck plays: The classic Walls deck. Cheap defenders draw you cards, make mana and block all day, then turn around and attack for their toughness.
Build around:
- Overgrown Battlement ($0.26, in 94% of decks): taps for {G} per defender
- Axebane Guardian ($0.15, in 91% of decks): taps for mana of any colors, one per defender
- Wall of Omens ($0.27, in 82% of decks): a wall that draws a card, and another one from Arcades
Popularity and price: 1,801 EDHREC decks in the past month (23,461 total). Market price $2.79 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
Why play Bant?
Bant has green’s ramp and big creatures, white’s removal and protection, and blue’s card draw and counterspells. It has very little direct damage, so most Bant decks win by building a board that’s too big or too well-protected to deal with. That’s why so many of these commanders care about +1/+1 counters.
The cheapest way in is Arcades. Its three key Walls cost under 30 cents each, and the commander itself is under $3.
Honorable mentions
- Choco, Seeker of Paradise (1,461 decks in the past month, about $0.41): when your Birds attack, you dig for a card and put the lands you find onto the battlefield, and Choco grows with every land. A Birds and landfall deck for under 50 cents.
- Yuna, Grand Summoner (1,114 decks, about $3.82): taps for any color and gives your next creature two extra +1/+1 counters. When another permanent of yours with counters on it goes to the graveyard, she puts that many +1/+1 counters on a creature.
- Peter Parker (620 decks, about $2.35): a two-mana Hero that transforms into Amazing Spider-Man, which lets your legendary spells be cast with web-slinging. More Spidey cards in our Spider-Man MTG cards list.
