1. Vraska, Soul of Stone

What it does: Your artifact creatures have vigilance. Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, you create a 1/1 Sculpture Treasure: an artifact creature you can sacrifice for one mana of any color.
How the deck plays: A spellslinger deck where every instant, sorcery or other noncreature spell you cast leaves behind a creature that is also a Treasure. You can attack with the Sculptures, or cash them in for mana to cast more spells. She came out on October 2, and she’s already the most-built Jeskai commander of the month by a wide margin.
Build around:
- Academy Manufactor ($8.47, in 44% of decks): each Treasure you make comes with a Clue and a Food
- Xorn ($11.35, in 43% of decks): an extra Treasure every time
- Reckless Fireweaver ($0.40, in 41% of decks): every artifact that enters, Sculptures included, deals 1 damage to each opponent
Popularity and price: 5,876 EDHREC decks in the past month (6,837 total). Market price $0.70 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
2. Kilo, Apogee Mind

What it does: Haste. Whenever Kilo becomes tapped, you proliferate: every permanent and player that has a counter gets another one of each kind.
How the deck plays: Tap Kilo as often as you can and grow every counter on the table: +1/+1 counters on your creatures, charge counters on your artifacts and, in many decks, poison counters on your opponents. Untap effects turn him into a repeatable engine. He’s the most popular Jeskai commander of all time on EDHREC.
Build around:
- Freed from the Real ($6.65, in 53% of decks): {U} to tap Kilo, {U} to untap him, so every two blue mana is another proliferate
- Prologue to Phyresis ($0.80, in 42% of decks): gives each opponent a poison counter for Kilo to grow
- Pemmin’s Aura ($7.33, in 33% of decks): another way to untap him for {U}
Popularity and price: 1,739 EDHREC decks in the past month (19,940 total, the most of any Jeskai commander). Market price $1.49 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
3. Éowyn, Shieldmaiden

What it does: First strike. At the beginning of combat on your turn, if another Human entered under your control this turn, you create two 2/2 red Human Knight tokens with trample and haste. Then if you control six or more Humans, you draw a card.
How the deck plays: A Humans go-wide deck. Play a Human before combat and Éowyn adds two hasty attackers every turn, and the tokens are Humans too, so you reach six quickly and start drawing cards.
Build around:
- Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold ($0.20, in 67% of decks): every Human that enters, tokens included, gives your team +1/+0
- Thalia’s Lieutenant ($0.45, in 37% of decks): grows with every Human you play
- Champion of the Parish ($0.81, in 29% of decks): a one-drop that grows all game
Popularity and price: 1,676 EDHREC decks in the past month (15,585 total). Market price $0.36 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
4. Inspirit, Flagship Vessel

What it does: Station: tap your other creatures to put charge counters on it. With 1 or more counters, at the beginning of combat it puts a +1/+1 counter or two charge counters on another artifact. With 8 or more it becomes a 5/5 flier, and your other artifacts have hexproof and indestructible.
How the deck plays: An artifact deck that feeds counters to its best pieces every turn, then makes the whole artifact board very hard to remove. It shares most of its cards with Kilo: 88% of Inspirit decks run him.
Build around:
- Kilo, Apogee Mind ($1.49, in 88% of decks): proliferates all those charge counters
- Uthros Research Craft ($3.81, in 88% of decks): draws a card whenever you cast an artifact spell
- Etherium Sculptor ($0.37, in 82% of decks): your artifacts cost {1} less
Popularity and price: 1,519 EDHREC decks in the past month (14,216 total). Market price $1.62 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
5. Zinnia, Valley’s Voice

What it does: Flying. Zinnia gets +X/+0, where X is the number of other creatures you control with base power 1. Your creature spells have offspring {2}: pay {2} more and you also get a 1/1 token copy.
How the deck plays: Every creature can make a 1/1 copy of itself, and every 1/1 makes Zinnia hit harder. Creatures with good enter-the-battlefield abilities get to use them twice.
Build around:
- Jacked Rabbit ($4.21, in 48% of decks): makes Rabbit tokens equal to its power every time it attacks
- Siege-Gang Commander ($0.26, in 35% of decks): its offspring copy makes three more Goblins
- Boss’s Chauffeur ($0.25, in 32% of decks): grows with every creature that enters, and leaves tokens behind when it dies
Popularity and price: 1,437 EDHREC decks in the past month (17,846 total). Market price $0.44 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
Why play Jeskai?
Jeskai gets white’s removal and protection, blue’s card draw and counterspells, and red’s damage and haste. What it doesn’t get is green’s ramp. That’s why so many of the best Jeskai commanders make their own mana or lean on artifacts: Vraska turns spells into Treasures, Kilo and Inspirit run on artifacts, and Éowyn and Zinnia go wide with cheap creatures instead of big ones.
If you’re building one for the first time, the cheapest way in is usually Éowyn or Zinnia. Both commanders cost under 50 cents, and the key support cards above are mostly under a dollar.
Honorable mentions
- Gandalf, Party Guest (1,378 decks in the past month, about $1.56): at the beginning of combat on your turn, cast an instant or sorcery from your hand for free if its mana value is no more than twice the number of legendary Wizards you control. Players fill the deck with legendary Wizards like Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy (56% of decks) and Adeliz, the Cinder Wind (57%). More from the set in our MTG: The Hobbit guide.
- Captain America, Team Leader (1,335 decks, about $2.78): the face of the Avengers Assemble precon. Every Hero that enters gets haste and a +1/+1 counter, and so does Cap. Our Avengers Assemble upgrade guide lists 10 cards to add for under $20.
- Captain America, First Avenger (1,123 decks, 16,272 all time, about $5.57): an Equipment commander. He catches an Equipment at the start of combat and can throw it for damage equal to its mana value.
More three-color commander rankings: Bant, Esper, Mardu, Grixis, Abzan, Naya and Sultai.
