What to skip

  • Elite Trainer Boxes at two or three times MSRP. When we checked, Amazon marketplace sellers had Destined Rivals at $124.48 and Ascended Heroes at $183.71. A standard Elite Trainer Box has a $49.99 MSRP, and restocks at Target, Walmart, Best Buy and the Pokémon Center sell at that price.
  • “Random card” lots. Bulk lots of 50 random cards are cheap, but they’re mostly common cards. A single League Battle Deck is a much better first set of cards.
  • Preorders for sets that aren’t out yet. Pokémon Delta Reign preorders are running far above MSRP. Our Delta Reign guide explains why to wait until its November 6 release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Pokémon cards so expensive on Amazon?
Many sealed Pokémon card products on Amazon are sold by marketplace resellers, who price them to the collector market. Elite Trainer Boxes have a $49.99 MSRP but were listed at $89.99 to $183.71 when we checked.

What is a good Pokémon gift under $20?
The Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck ($18.11) for card players, the 8-inch Pikachu plush ($14.99) for anyone, or the Essential Handbook ($12.75) for young fans.

What should I buy a Pokémon card collector?
Something that protects their cards. The Vault X zip binder ($29.99) plus a pack of toploaders is useful for every collector, and you can’t pick the wrong set.

Next step: decide whether your fan plays, collects or builds, then pick from that budget tier. Buy early: in late September the League Battle Deck was down to 15 in stock, and Jumbo Pikachu was already taking about a week to ship. Shopping for a Magic player too?
