Who this is for: You own the Multiverse Reforged precon from Reality Fracture Commander, or you’re about to buy it (about $48 on TCGplayer), and you want to make Jace stronger without rebuilding the deck. Every swap below is one-for-one. For how it compares with this year’s other precons, see best Commander precons of 2026, ranked.

How does the Jace deck win?

Jace, Multiverse Architect ({1}{W}{U}{B}{R}, 4 loyalty) is a planeswalker that can be your commander. His +1 draws two cards and puts one on the bottom of your library. His −3 exiles one of your creatures or planeswalkers and replaces it with the next creature or planeswalker from your library. And each opponent has to pay {2} at the start of their combat, or their creatures can’t attack your Jaces.

So the deck wants to keep Jace safe while he draws cards, turn small creatures into big ones with his −3, and fill the board with more planeswalkers. The best upgrades copy or double up on planeswalkers, add loyalty, and stop opponents from attacking them. The alternate commander in the box, Nissa, Leyline Tamer, draws a card on landfall and puts a creature from your library onto the battlefield once a turn.

What are the best Multiverse Reforged upgrades?

Here are the 10 cards to add, ranked by how many Jace, Multiverse Architect decks on EDHREC play them. None of them come in the precon. Click any card to check its price on TCGplayer.

1. Spark Double

Spark Double Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue rare · 4 mana · copies a creature or planeswalker

What it does: It can enter as a copy of a creature or planeswalker you control. It isn’t legendary, and a planeswalker copy gets an extra loyalty counter.

Why it fits Jace: Copy Jace and you have two of him, each drawing two cards a turn with its +1, and the copy starts with 5 loyalty. It’s the most-played card that isn’t in the box.

Play rate and price: In 46% of Jace, Multiverse Architect decks on EDHREC. Market price $8.51 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

2. Oath of Teferi

Oath of Teferi Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
White-blue rare enchantment · 5 mana

What it does: When it enters, exile another permanent you control and return it at the next end step. You may activate each planeswalker’s loyalty abilities twice each turn.

Why it fits Jace: Jace can +1 twice for four cards, or +1 and then −3 in the same turn. Blinking a planeswalker also resets its loyalty when it comes back.

Play rate and price: In 41% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $8.72 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

3. Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God

Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Grixis mythic planeswalker · 5 mana

What it does: He has all loyalty abilities of every other planeswalker on the battlefield. +1: draw a card, and each opponent exiles a card from hand or a permanent. −3: destroy a creature or planeswalker.

Why it fits Jace: He copies Jace’s abilities too, so he can draw like Jace and then use his own removal. In a deck full of planeswalkers, he does a little of everything.

Play rate and price: In 39% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $11.64 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

4. Ichormoon Gauntlet

Ichormoon Gauntlet Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue mythic artifact · 3 mana

What it does: Your planeswalkers gain “0: Proliferate” and “−12: Take an extra turn after this one.” Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put an additional counter on a permanent that already has that kind of counter.

Why it fits Jace: Every planeswalker can grow all your other planeswalkers, and the noncreature spells you cast add even more loyalty. It’s the priciest add here, and one of the strongest engines for a planeswalker deck.

Play rate and price: In 30% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $15.57 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

5. Jace, Reality Sculptor

Jace, Reality Sculptor Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue rare planeswalker · 5 mana · Reality Fracture

What it does: +1: Empower Jace X, where X is the number of Islands you control (that makes a Jace planeswalker token or adds loyalty to it). −3: until your next turn, attackers get −5/−0. 0: if your Jaces have 25 or more loyalty in total, exile all but the bottom card of each opponent’s library.

Why it fits Jace: A second Jace from the same set that builds an army of Jace tokens, and it’s under a dollar. Proliferate cards push your Jaces toward that 25-loyalty finish.

Play rate and price: In 29% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.92 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

6. Counterspell

Counterspell Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue uncommon instant · 2 mana

What it does: Counter target spell.

Why it fits Jace: A board wipe or a single removal spell aimed at Jace can undo several turns of building loyalty. Two blue mana stops it.

Play rate and price: In 27% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.83 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

7. Vraska, Betrayal’s Sting

Vraska, Betrayal’s Sting Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Black mythic planeswalker · 6 mana

What it does: 0: draw a card, lose 1 life, and proliferate. −2: target creature becomes a Treasure. You can pay 2 life instead of {B} (she enters with two fewer loyalty).

Why it fits Jace: Her 0 grows every planeswalker you control each turn while drawing a card, and her −2 handles a big threat.

Play rate and price: In 23% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.73 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

8. Hullbreaker Horror

Hullbreaker Horror Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue rare · 7 mana · 7/8 flash

What it does: Flash. It can’t be countered. Whenever you cast a spell, you may return a spell you don’t control or a nonland permanent to its owner’s hand.

Why it fits Jace: A huge blocker that protects your planeswalkers, and every spell you cast after it bounces an attacker or an opponent’s spell. It’s also a great hit off Jace’s −3.

Play rate and price: In 22% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $6.05 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

9. Propaganda

Propaganda Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Blue uncommon enchantment · 3 mana

What it does: Creatures can’t attack you unless their controller pays {2} for each one.

Why it fits Jace: Jace already taxes attacks on him. Propaganda taxes attacks on you too, so opponents run out of mana before they can pressure your planeswalkers.

Play rate and price: In 20% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.11 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

10. Divergent Transformations

Divergent Transformations Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
Red rare instant · 7 mana, less in multiplayer

What it does: Undaunted (it costs {1} less for each opponent). Exile two target creatures; each controller reveals cards until a creature card and puts it onto the battlefield.

Why it fits Jace: Jace’s −3 already turns a small creature into the next big one in your deck. This does it twice at instant speed, and in a four-player game it costs four mana.

Play rate and price: In 19% of Jace decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.53 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

Which cards should you cut from Multiverse Reforged?

These are the 10 precon cards that the fewest Jace decks on EDHREC still play. Most of them are the precon’s own new legends. They’re fine cards that just don’t help a planeswalker deck.

CutStill played inWhy it goes
Dack Fayden, Helping Hand10%Puts creatures from your library onto the battlefield, then hands them to your opponents.
Akroma, Angel of Fury13%Eight mana with three red symbols, in a four-color deck.
Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel16%A lifegain card-draw engine that needs {W}{W}{B}{B}.
The Ur-Sphinx16%Nine mana, and its discount only helps other Sphinxes.
Omnath, Locus of the Void19%Seven mana for a landfall mana engine the deck doesn’t need.
Venser, Fervent Forger19%Only as good as whatever an opponent happens to be casting.
Currency Converter21%Slow looting for a deck that already draws plenty with Jace.
Ginger, Queen of Sweets24%Six mana for the monarch and Food tokens, which don’t help planeswalkers.
Teferi’s Reproach25%Shuts one opponent out of a turn cycle, which is very situational.
Fact or Fiction25%Good card draw, but Jace’s +1 already does that every turn.

Don’t throw the legends away. Several of them are popular commanders in their own right. The Ur-Sphinx is the second most-built Esper commander this month (see our top 5 Esper commanders), and Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel and Dack Fayden are both in EDHREC’s top 20 commanders this month. Pulling them out of Jace gives you the start of another deck.

Which lands should you upgrade?

A four-color deck needs mana that enters untapped. These four swaps replace the precon’s slowest lands:

AddPriceCut
Hallowed Fountain (white-blue)$7.16Restless Anchorage
Watery Grave (blue-black)$10.14Contaminated Landscape
Steam Vents (blue-red)$10.36Restless Spire
Theorist’s Sanctum (Island)$0.66Perilous Landscape

Theorist’s Sanctum is the cheap standout. It’s an Island that enters untapped if you control a Jace or reveal one from your hand, and later it can make or grow a Jace token for {2}{U}.

What if you want to spend more?

  • Aminatou, the Fateshifter (about $15.52, in 31% of Jace decks): her −1 flickers one of your permanents, so you can reset Jace’s loyalty after using his −3.
  • Avacyn, Angel of Hope (about $36.55, in 19%): makes every other permanent you control indestructible, planeswalkers included.

Cut another low-play-rate card for each, such as Plan for All Outcomes or Shark Typhoon.
