GTA 5 vs GTA 6: Every Difference We Know [2026]

How long is the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6?

13 years and 2 months: September 17, 2013 to November 19, 2026. It’s the longest wait between two mainline GTA games. GTA IV to GTA V (April 29, 2008 to September 17, 2013) took just under five and a half years.

GTA 6 slipped twice on the way. Trailer 1 ended on “2025,” Rockstar then set May 26, 2026, and on November 6, 2025 it moved the game to November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s latest annual report still lists that date. For sales totals and the full series timeline, see GTA by the numbers.

Is GTA 6 bigger than GTA 5?

Yes, by Rockstar’s own count. It hasn’t published square miles for either game, but it has given ratios. Rockstar told The New York Times in August 2026 that GTA 6’s overall map is three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson has said the world is about twice the size of GTA 5’s. Fan mapping projects post square-mile estimates, but they’re built from screenshots and trailer footage, so we leave them out.

Here’s what is official. GTA 5’s world is one city, Los Santos, plus the countryside of Blaine County. Before launch, Rockstar told Game Informer (November 2012) it was larger than San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV combined.

GTA 6’s map is a whole state. Rockstar’s site names six regions of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. That’s two named areas against six.

Rockstar’s text for the August 27, 2026 Extended Look calls GTA 6 the series’ “biggest, most immersive evolution” yet. That’s a pitch, not a measurement, and so is playtime: Nelson’s own run through the game took about 80 hours, including some optional goals, per The New York Times. That’s one developer’s playthrough, not an average.

The download is a hint, not a map size. GTA 6’s pre-load needs up to 212 GB, and GTA 5 Enhanced on PC lists 105 GB. More detail takes space too, not just more land. Clearing room? Our GTA 6 storage guide covers every console.

Los Santos vs Leonida: how do the settings compare?

GTA 5 is Rockstar’s Los Angeles, with a desert, a lake and a mountain attached. GTA 6 is its Florida: Vice City is the Miami stand-in, surrounded by swamps, islands, small towns and a national park.

Rockstar’s own Vice City blurb says it’s a long way from the ’80s. So this is a present-day Vice City, not the 1980s one from 2002’s GTA Vice City.

Grassrivers is the clearest break from GTA 5. Rockstar calls the gators its most famous attraction and hints at worse things in the mangroves. Its screenshots show airboats, alligators and a police chase through the swamp. GTA 5’s nearest match, the marsh around Lago Zancudo, has no alligators.

Jason and Lucia vs Michael, Franklin and Trevor

GTA 5 gave you three playable leads: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. You could swap between them in free roam and in the middle of heists. GTA 6 has two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

Rockstar’s bios set them up fast. Jason grew up around grifters, did a stint in the Army, and now works for drug runners in the Keys. Lucia’s father taught her to fight, fighting for her family put her in Leonida Penitentiary, and she’s out with a plan.

Lucia is the series’ first female lead since it went 3D with GTA III in 2001. The 1997 original let you pick from a cast that included women, so she isn’t the first woman you could ever play.

Switching works differently too. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told Famitsu (translated by GamesRadar+, August 31, 2026) that the story decides. Some missions let you swap freely, some lock you to one character, and some force a swap. His example: the bank-robbery getaway from the trailer, where you shoot from the car as Jason, then take the wheel as Lucia.

The side cast changes shape as well. GTA 5’s heists ran through Lester Crest. GTA 6’s official cast includes Raul Bautista, a veteran bank robber, plus Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, the Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy) and Brian Heder, an old-school drug runner in the Keys.

What’s new in GTA 6 compared to GTA 5?

Only what Rockstar has shown or written, checked against what GTA 5 already had:

• Reefs. Rockstar’s Keys screenshots show scuba divers over coral with a sea turtle and an eel. GTA 5 had scuba gear and a submarine, so diving returns rather than debuts.
• Florida wildlife. Alligators in Grassrivers, an iguana in the Keys, dolphins beside a boat. GTA 5 had animals too (deer, cougars, sharks, Chop the dog), so animals aren’t new. The Florida species are.

• Social media everywhere. Much of Trailer 1 was framed as in-game social clips, and Rockstar’s Real Dimez bio credits their rise to rap tracks and a nonstop social presence. GTA 5 had a phone and Lifeinvader, its Facebook parody, but social video wasn’t the center.
• More animation, more crowds. Rockstar told The New York Times that GTA 6 has more than 600,000 animations, against about 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. Official screenshots show packed beaches, boat parties in the Keys and full clubs. Rockstar says Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on a PS5, half gameplay and half cutscenes.
• A region built for the outdoors. Rockstar pitches Mount Kalaga National Park for hunting, fishing and off-road trails, and its screenshots show dirt bikes, kayaks and a cougar stalking deer. GTA 5 had hunting too, with Cletus in Blaine County.

Does GTA 6 look better than GTA 5?

It’s built for far stronger hardware. GTA 5 was made for the PS3 and Xbox 360, consoles with 512 MB of memory. GTA 6 skips last-gen entirely and runs only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 has 16 GB.

GTA 5 has been upgraded since: PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, PC in 2015, PS5 and Series X|S in 2022, and a free PC Enhanced update with ray tracing in March 2025. So the gap is smaller than 2013 footage suggests.

The PlayStation Store tags GTA 6 “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” A fair graphics verdict needs the finished game, so treat any side-by-side made before November 19 as trailer footage, not a review.

How much does GTA 6 cost compared to GTA 5?

$20 more for the base game. GTA 6’s Standard Edition costs what GTA 5’s Special Edition did in 2013.

US prices. GTA 5’s $59.99 was the standard US price at launch; its Special and Collector’s prices come from Rockstar’s May 2013 announcement. GTA 6 prices from Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 announcement, matched by both console stores on October 29, 2026. Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not announced. Rockstar Support lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and there’s no PS4 or Xbox One version either. GTA 5 took about 19 months to reach PC (September 2013 to April 2015). Rockstar hasn’t hinted at a GTA 6 PC date.

Should you play GTA 5 before GTA 6?

You don’t need to. Rockstar hasn’t announced any story link, and each GTA tells its own story with new leads. The official nods so far are small: Lucia’s family came from Liberty City, the city of GTA IV, and the Ultimate Edition’s revolvers come from the “Vercetti Estate,” a name Vice City fans will know.

Will GTA Online move to GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn’t said. It calls GTA 6 “a single-player experience” in its June 24, 2026 announcement and on both console store listings. It hasn’t announced a GTA 6 online mode, a date for one, or a way to carry over GTA Online characters or money.

The free GTA+ month that comes with digital pre-orders is a GTA Online perk, including a monthly GTA$500,000 deposit for your GTA Online character. So on November 19, GTA Online is still part of GTA 5.
