The best Doom Prevails upgrades are Leader, Super-Genius (33 cents, and in 70% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC), Norman Osborn and Monument to Endurance. Our 10 adds cost about $53 together on TCGplayer. They replace the 10 precon cards Doom players cut most often, starting with Superior Foes of Spider-Man and Damocles Base. Every add does more of what Doctor Doom wants: connive, discard lands and drain your opponents.

Who this is for: You own the Doom Prevails precon, or you’re about to buy it (about $68 on TCGplayer), and you want a first round of upgrades that keeps the deck’s game plan instead of rebuilding it. Every swap below is one-for-one, so you can make them in any order as your budget allows. For a look at the deck straight out of the box, read our Doom Prevails precon review.

How does the Doctor Doom deck win?

Doctor Doom, King of Latveria ({1}{U}{B}{R}, 3/3) has two abilities. Whenever you discard one or more land cards, each opponent loses 2 life. And at the beginning of combat on your turn, a Villain you control gains menace and connives: it draws a card, then you discard a card, and it gets a +1/+1 counter if you discarded a nonland card.

So the deck has two engines: connive to keep cards flowing, and land discards to drain the table. The best upgrades make you connive more, pay you for every discard, or let you use the cards you threw away. The alternate commander in the box, Loki, the Deceiver, copies your Villains when he attacks, and most of the adds below are Villains too.

What are the best Doom Prevails upgrades?

Here are the 10 cards to add, ranked by how many Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC play them. None of them come in the precon. Click any card to check its price on TCGplayer.

1. Leader, Super-Genius

Leader, Super-Genius Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Blue rare · 4 mana · 1/3 Villain

What it does: If a creature you control would connive, you draw a card first, then it connives. At the beginning of combat on your turn, a creature you control connives.

Why it fits Doom: Doom already makes a Villain connive every combat. Leader adds a second connive at the same time and draws you an extra card before each one. He’s a Villain himself, so Doom can target him too. It’s the most-played card that isn’t in the box, and it costs less than a dollar.

Play rate and price: In 70% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.33 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

2. Norman Osborn

Norman Osborn Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Blue mythic · 2 mana · transforms into Green Goblin

What it does: Can’t be blocked, and connives whenever he deals combat damage to a player. For {1}{U}{B}{R} he transforms into Green Goblin, a flying, menace Villain. Spells you cast from your graveyard cost {2} less, and nonland cards in your graveyard gain mayhem: you can cast a card you discarded this turn from your graveyard.

Why it fits Doom: A two-drop that connives every turn from turn three, then turns every good card you discard into a card you can still cast. That fixes the biggest problem with Doom’s deck, which is throwing away spells you wanted.

Play rate and price: In 69% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $14.45 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

3. Monument to Endurance

Monument to Endurance Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Colorless rare artifact · 3 mana

What it does: Whenever you discard a card, choose one you haven’t chosen yet this turn: draw a card, create a Treasure, or each opponent loses 3 life.

Why it fits Doom: This deck discards several cards every turn, so Monument can give you all three in a single turn: a card, a Treasure and 3 life from every opponent. Being colorless, it fits any discard deck you build later too.

Play rate and price: In 56% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $12.65 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

4. Green Goblin, Nemesis

Green Goblin, Nemesis Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Black-red rare · 4 mana · 3/3 flying Villain

What it does: Flying. Whenever you discard a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on a Goblin you control. Whenever you discard a land card, create a tapped Treasure.

Why it fits Doom: Every land you discard already drains each opponent for 2 through Doom. Green Goblin adds a Treasure each time, so the same discard ramps you as well. Nonland discards grow him, and as a flying Villain he’s a great target for Doom’s menace.

Play rate and price: In 50% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $10.07 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

5. Cool but Rude

Cool but Rude Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Red rare Class · 2 mana · Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

What it does: Level 1: whenever you attack, you may discard a card to draw a card. Level 2 ({1}{R}): whenever you discard a card, it deals 2 damage to each opponent. Level 3 ({1}{R}): search your library for any card, then discard a card at random.

Why it fits Doom: Level 2 is why it’s here. Every discard becomes 2 damage to each opponent, on top of Doom’s land drain, and this deck discards a lot. Yes, that’s Raphael from the Ninja Turtles set on the art, and he fits a Doctor Doom deck perfectly.

Play rate and price: In 48% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $5.68 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

6. Archfiend of Ifnir

Archfiend of Ifnir Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Black rare · 5 mana · 5/4 flying Demon

What it does: Flying. Whenever you cycle or discard another card, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature your opponents control.

Why it fits Doom: It turns your discards into a slow, one-sided board wipe. Two or three discards in a turn clears out most token armies. It isn’t a Villain, so Doom can’t target it, but it’s a classic discard payoff and costs well under a dollar.

Play rate and price: In 47% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.37 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

7. Doctor Octopus, Master Planner

Doctor Octopus, Master Planner Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Blue-black mythic · 7 mana · 4/8 Villain

What it does: Other Villains you control get +2/+2. Your maximum hand size is eight, and at the beginning of your end step, if you have fewer than eight cards in hand, you draw up to eight.

Why it fits Doom: After a turn of discarding, Doc Ock refills your hand to eight, which fuels the next turn’s connives. The +2/+2 also turns every Villain in the deck into a real threat. Seven mana is a lot, but the Treasures from Green Goblin and Monument help you get there.

Play rate and price: In 46% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $6.11 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

8. M.O.D.O.K.

M.O.D.O.K. Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Black mythic · 5 mana · 2/2 flying, lifelink Villain

What it does: Flying, lifelink. Pay 3 life: M.O.D.O.K. connives (only during your turn). Creatures your opponents control get -1/-1.

Why it fits Doom: A connive you can repeat as long as you have life to pay, so you can keep digging for land cards to discard to Doom. Lifelink earns some of that life back, and the -1/-1 kills every 1-toughness creature your opponents control.

Play rate and price: In 43% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $2.57 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

9. Doom Reigns Supreme

Doom Reigns Supreme Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Black rare Plan enchantment · 2 mana

What it does: Whenever a Villain you control enters, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life, and it gets a plan counter. On the fifth counter you sacrifice it, an opponent exiles the top five cards of their library, and you may cast up to two spells from among them for free.

Why it fits Doom: The deck is full of Villains, so this drains every game, then pays off with two free spells from an opponent’s deck. It’s a Doctor Doom card in a Doctor Doom deck, and it costs less than a dollar.

Play rate and price: In 39% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.29 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

10. Green Goblin, Revenant

Green Goblin, Revenant Magic: The Gathering card, an upgrade for the Doom Prevails Commander deck
Black-red uncommon · 5 mana · 3/3 flying, deathtouch Villain

What it does: Flying, deathtouch. Whenever he attacks, discard a card, then draw a card for each card you’ve discarded this turn.

Why it fits Doom: Doom’s combat trigger (and Leader’s) make you discard before attackers are declared. By the time Green Goblin attacks you’ve usually discarded twice, so his own discard draws you three cards.

Play rate and price: In 39% of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC. Market price $0.32 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer

Which cards should you cut from Doom Prevails?

These are the 10 precon cards that the fewest Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC still play. Most of them are fine cards that just don’t connive, discard or drain.

CutStill played inWhy it goes
Superior Foes of Spider-Man10%Only triggers off spells with mana value 4 or more, and does nothing for connive or discard.
Damocles Base, Sword of Kang11%A strong Vehicle, but it needs Crew 3 every turn and does nothing with discards. We liked it in our review. Most Doom players still cut it.
Lady Loki, Agent of Chaos14%Six mana, and her damage depends on random mana values off the top of your library.
Tri-Sentinel, Act of Vengeance16%Seven mana with no link to the deck’s engines.
Klaw, Master of Sound17%Mostly needs to connect in combat to do anything.
Titania, Proud Pummeler17%A combat card (melee) in a deck that mostly wins by draining.
Helmut Zemo, Mastermind21%Can only recast spells with mana value up to his power, and he starts as a 2/2.
Syphon Mind21%Draws three in a four-player game, but your opponents discard instead of you, so none of Doom’s payoffs trigger.
Extract Power23%Six mana for one random card from the top of each player’s library.
Stilt-Man, Towering Terror23%Only borrows a permanent until the end of your next turn, and a 4/2 body dies easily.

“Still played in” is the share of Doctor Doom decks on EDHREC that kept the card. A low number means most players took it out.

Which lands should you upgrade?

The precon’s mana base has several slow lands. Three swaps fix most of it:

AddWhyPriceCut
Oscorp IndustriesA blue-black-red land with mayhem: discard it to drain with Doom, then play it from your graveyard the same turn (you lose 2 life). In 47% of Doom decks.$0.86Terramorphic Expanse
Watery GraveBlue-black dual that can enter untapped. In 37% of Doom decks.$10.10Choked Estuary
Blood CryptBlack-red dual that can enter untapped. In 38% of Doom decks.$9.24Scavenger Grounds

Keep the cycling lands. Canyon Slough and Fetid Pools enter tapped, but cycling a land card counts as discarding it, so each cycle drains every opponent for 2 with Doom. That’s why more than 60% of Doom decks keep them.

What if you want to spend more?

  • Crucible of Worlds (about $28, in 43% of Doom decks): you can play lands from your graveyard, so every land you discard to Doom comes back as a land drop.
  • Counterspell (about $3): two blue mana to stop a board wipe or a combo, and 40% of Doom decks find room for it.

Cut another low-play-rate card for each, such as Endless Ranks of HYDRA or Age of Ultron (both in 24% of Doom decks).
