What is Darkhold Destiny about?

Dormammu and Hela use a page of the Darkhold to tear rifts between realities, and arcane nightmares pour out across the Multiverse. That’s Wizards’ setup. Expect werewolves, vampires, witches and Marvel’s pantheon of gods.

The story is original, written by Magic’s own Narrative team rather than adapted from an existing comic. Marvel is turning it into a new comic by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, which introduces a brand-new character. The digital release is in February 2027, and the print edition arrives in April alongside the set.

Wizards has confirmed Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, Dormammu, Magik, Blade and the giant Gargantos so far. Panel art also showed Moon Knight and Ghost Rider, but their cards haven’t been revealed.

What are the four Darkhold Destiny Commander decks?

DeckLeaderGame plan
Lords of HelHelaSacrifice effects plus waves of undead tokens
Midnight SonsBladeVampires that gain life, then spend it on big effects
Gods of AsgardThorAsgardian armies of creatures with power 4 or more
Strange AcademyDoctor StrangeBlinking spellcasters for repeat enter-the-battlefield effects

Each deck has 30 new Commander cards and two foil commanders, one with borderless art. They’re $74.99 each, or $299.96 for all four. The Collector’s Edition versions put all 100 cards in Surge Foil and cost $639.96 for the set of four.

Wizards hasn’t listed colors yet. If you play Marvel Super Heroes decks, our ranking of all four Marvel precons shows how the last batch compared.

“Booster Pack” is the new name for Play Boosters. Starting in 2027, Wizards renamed them and dropped the guaranteed foil common or uncommon. Each pack still has at least one rare or mythic. Wizards says its new God Packs come to Universes Beyond sets starting in 2028, so don’t expect them here.

The two Scene Boxes form the story’s ending. Assault on Asgard shows Thor meeting Hela’s hordes, and Skirmish at the Sanctum shows Doctor Strange defending the Sanctum Sanctorum from Dormammu.

What Darkhold Destiny cards have been revealed?

The Darkhold and Hela, Mistress of Darkness cards from MTG Marvel: Darkhold Destiny

The headline reveal is The Darkhold itself, a mythic legendary artifact with the Book type, for {1}{B}{B}. Tap it to put a sin counter on it, draw a card for each sin counter, then lose 1 life for each card in your hand. For {6}{B}{B} and a tap, every player’s life total becomes the lowest one at the table, and you can only do that at sorcery speed.

It’s being compared to The One Ring because it draws more cards every turn. But it doesn’t protect you, and the life loss grows with your hand size, so it usually hurts more.

Hela, Mistress of Darkness is a 6/6 for {4}{B}{B}. Whenever a player loses life during your turn, you may create that many tapped 2/2 black Zombies, once each turn. She also shows off the set’s new mechanic, Vengeance: her card includes a second spell, Dark Tutor, that you can cast only from your graveyard. It finds any card for {1}{B}{B} and 3 life.

Magik, Illyana Rasputin and Darkchild, Demon Uncaged from MTG Marvel: Darkhold Destiny

Magik, Illyana Rasputin is a {1}{B}{R} 3/3 that exiles the top card of your library each upkeep so you can play it that turn. If you sacrificed two or more permanents in a turn, she can transform at your end step into Darkchild, Demon Uncaged, a 4/4 that keeps exiling cards until it hits a nonland and can pay 4 life to become indestructible for the turn.

Gargantos, the Endbringer, Penance Stare and Rise from the Nether cards from MTG Marvel: Darkhold Destiny

  • Gargantos, the Endbringer ({2}{B}{G}, rare): a borderless Commander card with deathtouch. It enters with three +1/+1 counters, doubles them every upkeep, and copies its combat damage to every other opponent.
  • Penance Stare ({W}, uncommon instant): destroy target attacking creature with mana value 3 or less.
  • Rise from the Nether ({6}{R}, uncommon Arcane sorcery): create a 3/1 black Mindless One for each noncreature, nonland card in your graveyard.
Temple of Khonshu and the five Darkhold Destiny basic lands

Temple of Khonshu is a dual land that taps for white or black and enters untapped only if you control a Dimension, a hint that Dimensions are a new kind of card in the set. The basic lands show Marvel realms, with flavor text from Thor (Asgard), Doctor Strange (the Dream Dimension), Sif (Svartalfheim), Magik (Limbo) and Morgan le Fay.

Wizards has also shown Angel, Spirit Sorcerer, Elf Warrior and Giant tokens. Full previews haven’t started, and we’ll add cards as they’re revealed.

Should you preorder Darkhold Destiny?

For most products, wait. Marvel Super Heroes shows what usually happens. Its Play Booster Box now sells for $148.94 on Amazon against a $209.70 MSRP, and its Commander decks go for $49.64 to $67.35 against $74.99.

The exception is Collector’s Edition decks, which are printed in smaller numbers. Marvel Super Heroes’ Avengers Assemble Collector’s Edition now sells for $179 from third-party sellers, above its $159.99 MSRP. If you want a specific Surge Foil deck, that’s the one product worth locking in early.

What to skip

  • Preordering booster boxes at full price. Prices on the last Marvel set fell after launch, and there’s no God Pack upside in this one.
  • Third-party “early” listings. The set doesn’t ship until April 2027. Stick to sellers with a clear release date.
  • Speculating on card prices from one reveal. Only a handful of cards are known, and The Darkhold’s real value depends on formats Wizards hasn’t confirmed.
