1. Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

What it does: Flying, ward {2}. Whenever another nontoken Dragon you control enters, create a token that’s a copy of it, except the token isn’t legendary.
How the deck plays: A Dragon deck where every Dragon arrives twice. Cast one and you get a copy, and the copy triggers every “whenever a Dragon enters” card too. It’s the most-built Temur commander on EDHREC, this month and all time.
Build around:
- Dragon Tempest ($1.42, in 79% of decks): gives your fliers haste, and each Dragon and its copy deal damage equal to the number of Dragons you control
- Dragonspeaker Shaman ($0.33, in 70% of decks): makes every Dragon spell cost {2} less
- Garruk’s Uprising ($0.41, in 72% of decks): draws a card for each big Dragon and copy that enters, and gives them all trample
Popularity and price: 2,301 EDHREC decks in the past month (28,836 total, the most of any Temur commander). Market price $4.92 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
2. Ureni of the Unwritten

What it does: Flying, trample. Whenever Ureni enters or attacks, look at the top eight cards of your library. You may put a Dragon creature card from among them onto the battlefield, and the rest go to the bottom in a random order.
How the deck plays: A Dragon deck that puts Dragons onto the battlefield for free. Every attack digs eight cards deep for another one, so the deck plays as many Dragons as it can fit. It’s the priciest commander in this top five because its only printing is a borderless card.
Build around:
- Temur Ascendancy ($3.84, in 92% of decks): gives your creatures haste and draws a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters
- Lathliss, Dragon Queen ($0.40, in 91% of decks): makes a 5/5 flying Dragon token whenever another nontoken Dragon enters
- Hellkite Courser ($4.35, in 86% of decks): brings Ureni out of the command zone with haste for a turn, so it digs for a Dragon when it enters and again when it attacks
Popularity and price: 2,141 EDHREC decks in the past month (22,825 total). Market price $21.37 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
3. Animar, Soul of Elements

What it does: Protection from white and from black. Whenever you cast a creature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Animar. Creature spells you cast cost {1} less for each +1/+1 counter on Animar.
How the deck plays: A creature-chain deck. Every creature you cast makes the next one cheaper, until small creatures are free and you can recast creatures that return themselves to your hand. Animar was first printed in the original 2011 Commander decks and is still the second most-built Temur commander of all time.
Build around:
- Forgotten Ancient ($0.33, in 53% of decks): grows whenever anyone casts a spell, then moves its counters onto Animar at your upkeep
- Ancestral Statue ($0.15, in 51% of decks): can return itself to your hand, so once Animar has four counters you can cast it again and again for free, growing Animar each time
- Primordial Sage ($0.86, in 30% of decks): draws a card for every creature spell you cast
Popularity and price: 1,877 EDHREC decks in the past month (23,855 total). Market price $26.40 for the Masters 25 printing; the Secret Lair version is about $19.91 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
4. Flubs, the Fool

What it does: You may play an additional land on each of your turns. Whenever you play a land or cast a spell, draw a card if you have no cards in hand. Otherwise, discard a card.
How the deck plays: A discard and land deck. Flubs empties your hand fast, then draws a card each time you play a land or cast a spell with an empty hand. Cards that reward discarding, like madness cards and the Rootwallas, do the rest.
Build around:
- Song of Creation ($0.68, in 77% of decks): another extra land drop and two cards for every spell you cast, and it discards your hand at end of turn, which Flubs doesn’t mind
- Eruth, Tormented Prophet ($0.39, in 59% of decks): turns each draw into two cards exiled that you can play this turn, so your hand stays empty and Flubs keeps drawing
- Lotus Cobra ($5.84, in 57% of decks): adds a mana of any color for every land you play, and Flubs gives you two land drops a turn
Popularity and price: 1,517 EDHREC decks in the past month (22,882 total). Market price $2.89 for its only printing, an extended-art Bloomburrow buy-a-box card (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
5. Xyris, the Writhing Storm

What it does: Flying. Whenever an opponent draws a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, create a 1/1 green Snake. Whenever Xyris deals combat damage to a player, you and that player each draw that many cards.
How the deck plays: A group-draw deck. You hand everyone extra cards, and every extra card an opponent draws gives you a Snake. The table gets more cards, and you get an army.
Build around:
- Howling Mine ($5.26, in 45% of decks): every player draws an extra card each turn, and each opponent’s extra card makes you a Snake
- Scrawling Crawler ($3.23, in 45% of decks): each player draws a card in your upkeep, which makes Snakes, and opponents lose 1 life for every card they draw
- Whirlpool Warrior ($1.38, in 30% of decks): for {R} and a sacrifice, every player shuffles their hand away and draws that many cards, and each opponent’s new hand makes you a pile of Snakes
Popularity and price: 1,506 EDHREC decks in the past month (19,875 total). Market price $1.70 (TCGplayer, Oct 24). Check today’s price on TCGplayer
Why play Temur?
Temur is the big-creature color combination. Green brings ramp and huge creatures, red brings haste and damage, and blue brings card draw and counterspells. Its weak spot is removal: without white or black, Temur mostly answers threats with damage, fight cards, counterspells and bounce. That’s why so many Temur decks just aim to go bigger than everyone else, like Miirym and Ureni with their Dragons.
The cheapest way in is Xyris or Flubs. Both commanders cost under $3, and Miirym’s three key cards add up to about $2.16.
Honorable mentions
- Eshki, Temur’s Roar (1,473 decks in the past month, 15,137 all time, about $2.63): the face commander of the Temur Tarkir: Dragonstorm precon. It grows with every creature spell you cast, draws a card for creatures with power 4 or more, and hits every opponent when you cast one with power 6 or more.
- Bruce Banner (1,395 decks, about $2.47): a one-mana card-draw engine that transforms into The Incredible Hulk, an 8/8 that untaps and gets an extra combat whenever he’s dealt damage while attacking. Our Bruce Banner combo guide explains his infinite combo.
- Iroh, Grand Lotus (1,214 decks, 15,556 all time, about $0.37): from the Avatar: The Last Airbender set. During your turn, the instants and sorceries in your graveyard have flashback.
