It’s the eighth and final episode of season 1, which premiered August 16 and has aired weekly on Sundays.
What happened in Lanterns so far? (spoilers)

Two timelines, one murder, and a lot of fear. Here’s what to remember going into the finale:
- 2016, Rushville, Nebraska: Hal Jordan and his trainee, John Stewart, investigate a mass shooting that Hal is sure is alien. The killer turns out to be a Manhunter, one of the Guardians’ rogue android peacekeepers, living as rancher William Macon’s wife, Zoe. She also killed Abin Sur. Before John shot her, she destroyed Rushville with orbital strikes.
- Hal and John broke apart: pushed by Sinestro to prove John wasn’t ready to replace him, Hal sabotaged his own trainee. By 2026 they’re estranged, and a café meeting meant to patch things up ends with John breaking Hal’s nose.
- 2026: Hal is dead. John, now working as an architect, teams up with Sheriff Kerry Kane to find out who killed him. He digs up Hal’s body to recover the ring and works with a hologram of Hal stored inside it.
- Guy Gardner is here: Nathan Fillion’s Guy, from 2025’s Superman, shows up and tells John that Sinestro has escaped from prison. Superman takes place between the show’s two timelines.
- Episode 7’s cliffhanger: on the ruined homeworld of the aliens hunting the Manhunter, John and the hologram learn the Manhunters used a fear-inducing gas to make that species destroy itself. The episode ends when a hooded figure is revealed to be Sinestro.
What will happen in the Lanterns finale?
It has to answer two questions: who killed Hal Jordan, and is he really dead? The finale trailer leans hard on Sinestro and on fear, the emotion that powers the Yellow Lantern Corps in the comics, which fits the show’s “Are You Afraid?” tagline.
In the comics, Sinestro was Hal’s mentor before fear turned him, and his Sinestro Corps went to war with the Green Lanterns. Is there a Lanterns season 2?

Not yet. As of September 30, HBO hasn’t renewed Lanterns. A writers’ room has been exploring stories for a possible second season, but reports in mid-September said a renewal wasn’t imminent, and HBO decides based on the scripts it sees.
The numbers are strong, though:
- 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from 144 critics, and 72 on Metacritic
- 9.3 million viewers worldwide for the premiere in its first three days
- 10 million viewers worldwide for episode 3
Showrunner Chris Mundy has said the team feels good that it told season 1’s story well, so the finale should resolve the Rushville mystery either way.
Where can you read the Lanterns story in the comics?
The show isn’t a direct adaptation, but two books cover its biggest threads. Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War Compendium is the definitive story of Sinestro turning fear into an army. Green Lantern: War Journal Vol. 1 is the best recent John Stewart story, if the show made you a John fan.
