5 Fun Reality Fracture Commander Deck Ideas (Built Around the Echoverse Legends)

Verdict: The most fun Reality Fracture commanders aren’t the obvious power picks. They’re the weird Echoverse versions of famous characters: a white-black Niv-Mizzet that turns life into cards, a mono-black Avacyn that brings your creatures back every turn, and a blue Yargle that’s a 3/9 with no abilities at all. Here are five deck ideas built around them, from a $41 centerpiece to a 30-cent meme.

Who this is for: Commander players who want a new deck from Reality Fracture that’s more fun than a top-tier build, plus anyone curious what the Echoverse did to their favorite characters.

What makes Reality Fracture commanders different?

Reality Fracture is built on “echoed pairs”: famous legends paired with alternate-universe versions from Jace’s Echoverse. Sometimes the twin is barely recognizable. Avacyn turns black, Ob Nixilis becomes a white Angel, and Yargle trades its 9/3 body for a 3/9 one.

5 fun Reality Fracture Commander deck ideas

1) Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel: turn life gain into cards

Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel. Card: Wizards of the Coast via Scryfall.

A white-black Niv-Mizzet that draws cards instead of dealing damage. Whenever you gain life, you can pay that much life to draw that many cards. Its tap ability drains each opponent for 1 and gains you 1, so on its own it’s a repeatable “draw a card, drain everyone” button once it’s been on the battlefield for a turn.

Build around: Soul Warden for steady life gain, Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose and Sanguine Bond to turn life gain into damage, and Exquisite Blood, which with Vito or Sanguine Bond is the classic infinite drain combo, right in Niv’s colors.

2) Avacyn, Angel of Horror: creatures that won’t stay dead

Avacyn, Angel of Horror. Card: Wizards of the Coast via Scryfall.

A mono-black 8/8 with flying and deathtouch. Whenever Avacyn or another nontoken creature you control dies, it comes back at the beginning of the next end step. That turns every sacrifice into a free value engine.

Build around: Gray Merchant of Asphodel, which drains your opponents again every time it returns, and free sacrifice outlets like Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod’s Altar and Phyrexian Altar. At about $41 before release, Avacyn is the priciest commander on this list.

3) Ob Nixilis, the Ascended: an Angel army from life gain

Ob Nixilis, the Ascended. Card: Wizards of the Coast via Scryfall.

Ob Nixilis as a white Angel. When it enters, it destroys all tapped creatures your opponents control and gains you 1 life for each one. At the beginning of each end step, including your opponents’, it makes a 4/4 flying Angel if you gained life that turn.

Build around: Soul Warden, Ajani’s Pridemate and Archangel of Thune for life gain every turn, and Emergence Zone or Vedalken Orrery to cast Ob Nixilis with flash after your opponents attack, when their creatures are still tapped.

4) Fblthp, Impossibly Lost: win with an empty library

Fblthp, Impossibly Lost. Card: Wizards of the Coast via Scryfall.

A two-mana blue commander with a built-in alternate win. When an opponent takes combat damage during your turn, you draw two cards, and if your library is empty, you win the game. The card even says you still win if you draw from an empty library this way, so you win as long as you have two or fewer cards left.

Build around: self-mill like Thought Scour, Mesmeric Orb and Fraying Sanity to empty your library fast, and unblockable creatures to guarantee the combat damage. It’s the same idea as Laboratory Maniac, but in your command zone.

5) Yargle, Goliath of Otaria: the vanilla frog challenge

Yargle, Goliath of Otaria. Card: Wizards of the Coast via Scryfall.

A 3/9 Frog Spirit with no abilities at all. The original Yargle, Glutton of Urborg, is a famously bad 9/3, and its Echoverse twin flips the numbers. That’s the joke, and the opening for a deck.

Build around: cards that switch power and toughness, like Twisted Image, Merfolk Thaumaturgist and Inside Out, to turn Yargle into a 9/3 at the right moment. Add Whispersilk Cloak or Shadowspear so it connects. Three hits is 27 commander damage, enough to take out a player.

Where do you get these commanders?

Niv-Mizzet, Avacyn and Ob Nixilis come from the Multiverse Reforged Commander deck, Reality Fracture’s precon. Fblthp and Yargle are uncommons from Reality Fracture boosters, so they’ll be cheap as singles. For a look inside the precon, see our Reality Fracture prerelease guide.
