The best way to start Disney Lorcana is the Hyperia City 2-Player Starter Set (about $26). It has two ready-to-play 60-card decks, Baymax’s Emerald/Sapphire deck and Madam Mim’s Amethyst/Steel deck, so two people can learn together straight out of the box. On a tighter budget, the Wilds Unknown 2-Player Starter Set (about $19) does the same job with Mrs. Incredible and Buzz Lightyear. If you only want one deck to try, older starter decks sell for under $15.

Best for two new players: Hyperia City 2-Player Starter Set

This came out with Lorcana’s newest set, Hyperia City, on October 23, 2026, and it’s the most complete way to start. You get two 60-card decks, each built around two ink colors:

  • Technically Terrific (Emerald/Sapphire): led by Baymax.
  • Madcap Whimsy (Amethyst/Steel): led by Madam Mim.

The box also has deck boxes, lore counters, damage tokens, a rulebook and 4 special foil cards, so there’s nothing else to buy before your first game. If one of you ends up hooked, both decks are built from current cards, so they’re easy to upgrade.

Best value: Wilds Unknown 2-Player Starter Set

Lorcana’s earlier 2-player set (spring 2026) costs about $7 less and works the same way: two 60-card decks, one Amber/Emerald and one Amethyst/Ruby, with Mrs. Incredible and Buzz Lightyear on the box, plus 4 special foils, deck boxes and lore counters. If the price gap matters more than having the newest cards, start here.

Want a guided first game? Lorcana Gateway

Gateway is Ravensburger’s learn-to-play box. It walks two players through their first games step by step instead of handing you a rulebook, which makes it a good fit for kids or anyone who has never played a trading card game.

Just want one deck? Older starter decks

Lorcana sets from The First Chapter to Whispers in the Well came with single starter decks, and many now sell for under $15, like Reign of Jafar’s Amber & Amethyst deck at about $9. They’re great for trying the game or for kitchen-table matches. Just know that Lorcana’s tournament format rotates older sets out over time, so check your store’s format before you build a competitive deck around one.

How Disney Lorcana works, in one minute

  • The goal: be the first to collect 20 lore.
  • Your deck: at least 60 cards, no more than 4 copies of any card, and up to two of the six ink colors (Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Steel).
  • Ink: once per turn, you can put a card with the ink symbol face down into your inkwell. That’s your mana for playing cards.
  • Questing: your characters “quest” to earn lore, which is how you win.
  • Challenging: characters can challenge an opponent’s exerted (tapped) characters to knock them out.
  • Other cards: actions, songs, items and locations add tricks and long-term bonuses.

Because everyone races to 20 lore, games are fast and friendly, which is a big part of why Lorcana is popular with families and new players.

How to upgrade your first Lorcana deck

  1. Play the decks against each other a few times before buying anything, so you know which ink pair you like.
  2. Buy singles, not packs. Picking the exact cards you want on TCGplayer is far cheaper than opening boosters.
  3. Try your store’s weekly Lorcana events. Local events are the fastest way to learn, and players there are usually happy to suggest upgrades.

Lorcana starter deck FAQ

What’s the best Lorcana starter deck for kids?

The Hyperia City or Wilds Unknown 2-Player Starter Set. Both come with everything two players need and use characters kids already know.

Can I play Lorcana with just one starter deck?

You need one deck per player. A 2-player starter set is the easiest way to get two.

Are the starter decks good enough for tournaments?

For casual local events, yes. For bigger tournaments you’ll want to upgrade with singles from the newest sets.
