Watch the Narnia movies in release order: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), then The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010). All three run 6 hours and 46 minutes. In the US, the first two stream on Disney+ and Dawn Treader on Hulu. Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew comes next, in theaters February 12, 2027 and on Netflix April 2, 2027. It’s a prequel with a new cast, so you can also start there.

How many Narnia movies are there?
There are three live-action Narnia movies so far, released from 2005 to 2010, and a fourth arrives in February 2027. Walden Media made all three. Disney co-produced and released the first two, and 20th Century Fox took over for Dawn Treader.
| Movie | US release | Run time | Stream (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe | Dec 9, 2005 | 2h 23m | Disney+ |
| 2. Prince Caspian | May 16, 2008 | 2h 30m | Disney+ |
| 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader | Dec 10, 2010 | 1h 53m | Hulu, Peacock |
| 4. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew | Feb 12, 2027 | Not announced | Theaters, then Netflix (Apr 2, 2027) |
Andrew Adamson directed the first two movies and Michael Apted directed Dawn Treader. The same young cast carries all three, led by Georgie Henley as Lucy and Skandar Keynes as Edmund, with Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan. All three are rated PG.
What order should you watch the Narnia movies in?
Release order is the best way in. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is built for first-timers. You step through the wardrobe with Lucy and meet Narnia, the White Witch and Aslan at the same moment the Pevensies do.
The three movies are one continuous story with one cast, so watch them 1, 2, 3. Prince Caspian picks up one year later for the Pevensies, and Dawn Treader one year after that.
Where does The Magician’s Nephew fit? Wherever you like. It’s the first story in Narnia’s history, but it’s a new Netflix film with a new cast, not part of the 2005 to 2010 series. Our pick: watch the three older movies before February 12, then see Gerwig’s film in theaters. You’ll catch the payoffs, like where the lamppost and the wardrobe came from.

Narnia movies in chronological (story) order
In story order, The Magician’s Nephew moves to the front. Everything else stays where it is.
| # | Movie | Earth year | In Narnia |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Magician’s Nephew (2027) | 1900 | Aslan creates Narnia |
| 2 | The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) | 1940 | The White Witch’s 100-year winter ends |
| 3 | Prince Caspian (2008) | 1941 | 1,300 Narnian years later |
| 4 | The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) | 1942 | 3 Narnian years later |
The jump between the first two films is the big one. One year passes for the Pevensies, but 1,300 years pass in Narnia, so their castle is a ruin when they return. Digory, the boy at the center of The Magician’s Nephew, grows up to be Professor Kirke, whose house the Pevensies stay in.
The Horse and His Boy, the book set during the Pevensies’ reign at the end of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, has never been filmed. You aren’t missing a movie.

How long are the Narnia movies?
The three Narnia movies run 6 hours and 46 minutes in total (406 minutes), using Box Office Mojo’s US run times. Prince Caspian is the longest at 2 hours 30 minutes. Dawn Treader is the shortest at 1 hour 53 minutes, 37 minutes shorter than Caspian.

Netflix hasn’t announced a run time for The Magician’s Nephew yet. Want to be caught up by opening day? One movie a weekend works:
- Weekend of January 23-24, 2027: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
- Weekend of January 30-31, 2027: Prince Caspian.
- Weekend of February 6-7, 2027: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
- Wednesday, February 10: IMAX sneak previews of The Magician’s Nephew. Wide release follows on Friday, February 12.
Where can I stream the Narnia movies?
Here’s where each film streams in the US, checked on JustWatch on November 6, 2026:
| Movie | Subscription | Free with ads |

| Prince Caspian | Disney+ | None listed |
| The Voyage of the Dawn Treader | Hulu; Peacock (listed as leaving December 1, 2026) | Fandango at Home Free |
| The Magician’s Nephew | Netflix, from April 2, 2027 | No |
All three older movies can also be rented or bought on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Dawn Treader was the Fox release, and it’s the only one of the three that isn’t on Disney+.

Are the BBC Narnia series and the 1979 cartoon streaming?
Not in the US. The BBC’s The Chronicles of Narnia (1988 to 1990) adapted four books in 18 episodes: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair. It’s still the only screen version of The Silver Chair. JustWatch lists no US streaming or digital option for it as of November 6, 2026. The BBC released a remastered Blu-ray and DVD set in the UK on November 24, 2025.
The animated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe aired on CBS in two parts on April 1 and 2, 1979, and won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. It runs 95 minutes, and JustWatch lists only a DVD.
When does The Magician’s Nephew come out?
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens in theaters and IMAX on Friday, February 12, 2027, with IMAX sneak previews from Wednesday, February 10. It streams on Netflix from April 2, 2027, per Netflix’s Tudum.
Greta Gerwig wrote and directed it. Emma Mackey plays Jadis, the future White Witch, Daniel Craig plays Uncle Andrew, and Meryl Streep voices Aslan. Narnia books in order: publication vs chronological
C.S. Lewis published the seven Chronicles of Narnia between 1950 and 1956. The movies follow publication order. The Magician’s Nephew was the sixth book out, even though its story comes first.
| # | Publication order | Chronological order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) | The Magician’s Nephew |
| 2 | Prince Caspian (1951) | The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe |
| 3 | The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) | The Horse and His Boy |
| 4 | The Silver Chair (1953) | Prince Caspian |
| 5 | The Horse and His Boy (1954) | The Voyage of the Dawn Treader |
| 6 | The Magician’s Nephew (1955) | The Silver Chair |
| 7 | The Last Battle (1956) | The Last Battle |
If you buy a set today, the numbers on the spines probably follow the chronological column. HarperCollins switched to story order when it took over the series in 1994, so its editions label The Magician’s Nephew as Book 1.
Lewis didn’t insist either way. In a 1957 letter to a young American fan, he said he leaned toward chronological order but that it probably didn’t matter much. Our pick for first-time readers is publication order, for the same reason as the movies: the wardrobe is the better door into Narnia. If you only read one book before February 12, make it The Magician’s Nephew.

Why did the Narnia movies stop after Dawn Treader?
Falling ticket sales cost the series its studio, and then the film rights ran out. Here’s the money, from Box Office Mojo:
| Movie | Budget | Worldwide | US & Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe | $180M | $745.0M | $291.7M |
| Prince Caspian | $225M | $419.7M | $141.6M |
| The Voyage of the Dawn Treader | $155M | $415.7M | $104.4M |
- Disney left after Prince Caspian. Caspian cost $45 million more than the first film and earned 44% less worldwide. In December 2008, Disney said it would not co-produce Dawn Treader, citing “budgetary considerations and other logistics.”
- Fox stepped in. In early 2009, 20th Century Fox agreed to split the costs with Walden Media. Dawn Treader opened on December 10, 2010 and made $415.7 million worldwide, but its $104.4 million in the US and Canada was about 36% of what the first film earned there.
- The rights ran out. In March 2011, Walden Media president Michael Flaherty said Walden had started talks with Fox and the Lewis estate about The Magician’s Nephew as the fourth film. No deal followed. In October 2011, Lewis’s stepson Douglas Gresham, a producer on the films, confirmed that Walden’s contract with the C.S. Lewis Company had expired.
- The Silver Chair stalled. In October 2013, the C.S. Lewis Company and The Mark Gordon Company announced The Silver Chair as the next film. It was never made.
- Netflix took over. On October 3, 2018, Netflix announced a multi-year deal with the C.S. Lewis Company to develop Narnia series and films. That deal led to Gerwig’s The Magician’s Nephew, the first Narnia movie in 16 years.
